Joe Allen Simpson (born December 31, 1951) is an American former professional baseball player, and has been aradio andtelevisionbroadcaster for theAtlanta Braves ofMajor League Baseball (MLB) since 1992.
He began hisbaseball career as anAll-Americanoutfielder/first baseman at theUniversity of Oklahoma.[1]
Simpson then played professionally for 12 seasons, beginning in1973, when he was drafted by theLos Angeles Dodgers in the third round.[1] While with the Dodgers in1978, he became the 3,000th strikeout victim ofGaylord Perry. He joined theSeattle Mariners in1979 before being traded to theKansas City Royals in1983. An outfielder and first baseman throughout his professional career, he retired from theCalifornia Angels organization after the1984 season.
Simpson worked as an analyst on Seattle Mariners telecasts for five years before joiningTurner Sports and theAtlanta Braves Radio Network in 1992.[2] He called Atlanta Braves games onTBS andTurner South until broadcasts ended on those networks.
Simpson was named "Georgia Sports Broadcaster of the Year" in 1995.[2]
Simpson was paired withBrian Jordan,Ron Gant andTom Glavine during broadcasts onPeachtree TV. He was paired withSkip Caray until Caray's death in the summer of 2008.
Simpson served as an analyst forMajor League Baseball on TBS coverage of the 2007 MLB Division Series with play-by-play commentatorDon Orsillo during the series between theColorado Rockies and thePhiladelphia Phillies.[3] The team called the one-game playoff between the Colorado Rockies and theSan Diego Padres. He has served as the color analyst for the coverage of the 2009National LeagueDivision Series between thePhiladelphia Phillies and theColorado Rockies with play-by-play commentatorBrian Anderson.
In January 2018, Simpson was inducted into the Braves’ Hall of Fame.[2]
Simpson called Braves games onFox Sports South andFox Sports Southeast withplay-by-play announcerChip Caray through the 2018 season.[4] Beginning in 2019, Simpson became the regular color commentator for theAtlanta Braves Radio Network alongside play-by-play announcerJim Powell.[4] As of 2021, Simpson is usually paired with Ben Ingram.[5]
