Anintracavernous (orintracavernosal)injection is aninjection into the base of thepenis. This injection site is often used to administer medications to check for or treaterectile dysfunction in adult men (in, for example, acombined intracavernous injection and stimulation test).[1] The more common medications administered in this manner include Caverject,Trimix (prostaglandin,papaverine, andphentolamine), Bimix (papaverine and phentolamine), and Quadmix (prostaglandin, papaverine, phentolamine, and eitheratropine orforskolin). These medications are all types ofvasodilators and causetumescence within 15 minutes.Common side effects includepriapism, bruising, fibrosis,Peyronie's disease, and pain.[citation needed]

Priapism is also often treated with intracavernous injections, usually withsympathomimetic vasoconstricting drugs likeadrenaline orphenylephrine.[citation needed]
