George William Stanger (born 15 August 2000) is a professionalfootballer who plays as adefender forScottish Championship clubAyr United.

Born in Scotland, Stanger has representedNew Zealand at youth level, including appearing at the Olympics.

Early and personal life

Stanger's father is formerScottish Internationalrugby union playerTony Stanger, and his mother Bid is fromAuckland, New Zealand.[2] George was born inMelrose in theScottish Borders; the family eventually settled inDunblane.[2][3][4]

Club career

Stanger began his career withStirling Albion, joiningHamilton Academical in January 2018 before being loaned back to Stirling Albion for the rest of the season, making his senior debut inScottish League Two.[4][3][5][6] During the 2018–19 campaign he played for Hamilton'syouth teams, including in theScottish Challenge Cup and theUEFA Youth League.[7][4][6]

In the summer 2019 transfer window, he was linked with a move away from Hamilton.[8] He made his first professional-level start for the club in theScottish Premiership on 24 August, a 3–1 home defeat toMotherwell in theLanarkshire derby.[6][9]

In September 2019 he moved on loan toEast Kilbride.[10] In January 2020 he moved on loan toForfar Athletic.[11]

He was released by Hamilton in October 2021[12] and joinedUniversity of Stirling in theLowland Football League, before signing forScottish League One sideDumbarton on loan in February 2022.[13] He scored his first goal in senior football for the Sons in a 3–2 defeat toAirdrieonians in April 2022[14] but turned down a new deal following the club's relegation toScottish League Two.[15]

Stanger signed forAlloa Athletic in July 2022.[16] After one season with Alloa, Stanger moved toAyr United in June 2023.[17]

International career

Stanger representedNew Zealand at the2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[2][18][4][6] In June 2021 he was called up to New Zealand's squad for the delayed2020 Summer Olympics.[19]
