Fritz Mackensen (born 8 April 1866 in Greene, nearKreiensen,Duchy of Brunswick – 12 May 1953 inBremen) was a German painter of theDüsseldorf school of painting andArt Nouveau.[1][2] He was a friend ofOtto Modersohn andHans am Ende, and was one of the co-founders of the artists' colony atWorpswede. From 1933 to 1935 he was head of theNordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen (today'sUniversity of the Arts Bremen). In 1937 he became a member of theNazi Party. He was buried in theWorpswede Cemetery.
