Afield galaxy is agalaxy that does not belong to a largergalaxy group or cluster and hence isgravitationally alone.
Roughly 80% of all galaxies located within5 Mpc (16 Mly) of theMilky Way are in groups or clusters of galaxies.[1] Mostlow-surface-brightness galaxies are field galaxies.[2] ThemedianHubble-type of field galaxies is Sb, a type ofspiral galaxy.[3]
