Anatomical terminology

From the posterior wall of thesaccule a canal, theendolymphatic duct, is given off; this duct is joined by theutriculosaccular duct, and then passes along thevestibular aqueduct and ends in a blind pouch, theendolymphatic sac, on the posterior surface of thepetrous portion of thetemporal bone, where it is in contact with thedura mater. Studies suggest that the endolymphatic duct and endolymphatic sac perform both absorptive andsecretory,[1][2][3][4] as well as phagocytic[5] and immunodefensive, functions.[6] Fittingly, contrast agent uptake in the endolymphatic sac and duct inMRI is inversely correlated toendolymphatic hydrops,[7] and endolymphatic sac and duct morphology changes have been observed inMeniere's Disease.[8]

Neoplasms of the endolymphatic sac are very rare tumors.
