Doula Mouriki (Greek:Ντούλα Μουρίκη; 1934–1991) was a GreekByzantinologist andart historian. She made important contributions to the study ofByzantine art in Greece.

Education

Doula Mouriki was born in 1934 atAmpelokepi (nearAigio).[1] She earned degrees in history and archaeology in 1956 from theUniversity of Athens.[2] From 1956 to 1957, she received a scholarship to visit theÉcole pratique des hautes études and theCollège de France, where she studied underAndré Grabar andPaul Lemerle.[1] Afterwards, she returned to the University of Athens to earn a degree inFrench literature in 1958.

In the early 1960s, Mouriki was first hired as a temporary staff member by theNational Archaeological Museum of Athens and shortly thereafter as a principal research assistant underManolis Hatzidakis at theByzantine and Christian Museum.[2] She later attendedPrinceton University, studying withKurt Weitzmann.[3] At Princeton, Mouriki earned an MFA in 1968 and a PhD in 1970,[4] completing her doctoral dissertation on miniatures in Byzantine manuscripts ofCosmas Indicopleustes'Christian Topography.[5] She holds the distinction of being the first woman to earn a PhD from the university's Department of Art and Archaeology.[6]

Career

After receiving her PhD, Mouriki taught at theNational Technical University of Athens, where she remained for the rest of her career. She was the first woman to receive the title of professor in the university's School of Architecture.[1] Mouriki also served as a member of the administrative council of theGreek Archaeological Society,[1] as a corresponding member of theIstituto di studi bizantini e neogreci,[3] and on an advisory committee for theGreek Ministry of Culture on the preservation of historical monuments atMistra.[1]

Mouriki's areas of research includedlate medievalCyprioticons,[7][8]Middle Byzantine-periodmosaics,[9][10] andPalaiologan-era monumentalpainting programmes in Greece.[11][12] She also produced two papers onGeorgian fresco cycles.[13][14] Many of her publications focused on Byzantine and Orthodox iconography, including that of theVirgin Mary, as well as the development of "regional schools" of medieval Orthodox painting.[1] Her 1985 monograph on the mosaics of theNea Moni of Chios was awarded theGottfried von Herder Award.[3]

Mouriki died on 25 November 1991 in Athens, Greece.[3]
