Curtis Wayne Whitley (May 10, 1969 – May 11, 2008) was an American professionalfootball player who was acenter in theNational Football League (NFL).[2] He playedcollege football for theClemson Tigers and was selected by theSan Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the1992 NFL draft.[3] Whitley played six seasons for the Chargers (1992–1994),Carolina Panthers (1995–1996), andOakland Raiders (1997).
Born inSmithfield, North Carolina, Whitley graduated fromSmithfield-Selma High School before attendingClemson University. In the NFL, he was selected by theCarolina Panthers in the1995 NFL Expansion Draft.[4]
Whitley was found dead from a drug overdose inTexas on May 11, 2008, one day after his 39th birthday.[5]
