Comendite at Lookout 589 in the Glass House Mountains Comendite is a hard, peralkaline igneous rock , a type of light blue greyrhyolite .[ 1] Phenocrysts are sodicsanidine with minoralbite and bipyramidalquartz .[ 2] The blue colour is caused by very small crystals ofriebeckite orarfvedsonite .[ 3] The 1903 eruption ofChangbaishan volcano in northeast China erupted comenditepumice .[ 4]
Comendite derives its name from the area of Le Commende onSan Pietro Island in Italy, where the rock type is found.[ 5] Comendite also occurs in theGlass House Mountains of southeastQueensland , Australia, as well as inSardinia ,Corsica ,Ascension Island ,Ethiopia ,Somalia and other areas ofEast Africa .[ 2]
