Chromosome 17 is one of the 23 pairs ofchromosomes inhumans. People normally have two copies of this chromosome. Chromosome 17 spans more than 84 millionbase pairs (the building material ofDNA) and represents between 2.5 and 3% of the total DNA incells.

Chromosome 17 contains theHomeobox Bgene cluster.

Genes

[edit]

Number of genes

[edit]

The following are some of the gene count estimates of human chromosome 17. Because researchers use different approaches togenome annotation their predictions of thenumber of genes on each chromosome varies (for technical details, seegene prediction). The most conservative estimate, fromCCDS, represents a lower bound on the total number of human protein-coding genes.[4]
