Ali ibn Abi Talib (Arabic:علي بن أبي طالب,strict transliteration:ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) (c. March 17, 599 – c. January 22, 661) was one of thecompanions and was the cousin and son-in-law of theIslamic prophetMuhammad. He succeeded CaliphUthman as the forth Caliph ofRashidun Caliphate in Sunni Islam and succeededprophetMuhammad as the fist imam in Shia Islam.
