TheBullenbeisser (German:Bullenbeißer), also known as theGerman Bulldog, is an extinctbreed ofdog known for itsstrength andagility.[1] It is an ancestor of both the modernBoxer and theEnglish bulldog.[2] The Bullenbeisser was amastiff-like dog and thought to have been bred as a hunting dog.[3] In the Middle Ages types of the Bullenbeisser were found in manyEuropean countries where they were used as boar dogs.[4] Later in the Bullenbeisser's history, they were thought to hold cattle at cattle markets or during slaughter by biting the animal's nose.[5] In Germany, there were two types of Bullenbeisser: the larger Danziger and the small Brabant Bullenbeisser,[6] which is often regarded as the precursor to theBoxer.

The two varieties of Bullenbeisser: the largeDanziger variety and the smallBrabanter variety.
