Brian D'Amato is an American author and sculptor.

Biography

When he was young, his father taught atWellesley College. During this time,Hillary Clinton (at the time, named Hillary Rodham), a student at the college,babysat him.[1]

D'Amato went to high school atNew Trier High School in the suburbs ofChicago.[1]

D'Amato received aBA fromYale University and anMA from theCUNY Graduate Center.[2] At Yale, D'Amato studied withJohn Hollander,Erwin Hauer, and William Bailey. At the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, he studied withRobert Pincus-Witten.

In the 1990s, D'Amato showed sculptures and installations at galleries and museums including theWhitney Museum, theWexner Center for the Arts,[3] and theNew Museum of Contemporary Art.[4] He has written for magazines, includingHarper's Bazaar,Index Magazine,Vogue,Flash Art, andArtforum, and he has taught art and art history at theCity University of New York,Ohio State University, andYale University.[5]

D'Amato's 1992 novel,Beauty, a thriller (withhorror elements) about cosmetic surgery, was translated into several languages.[5][6] His next novel, titledIn the Courts of the Sun, is the first book ofThe Sacrifice Game trilogy and was published byDutton in 2009.[7]New American Library published a trade paperback edition in 2009. The second book in the trilogy,The Sacrifice Game, was published byDutton 2012.[8] Beauty is being republished byLittle, Brown and Company's Mulholland Classics line in 2013.[9] D'Amato's work is often associated with the genres ofBiopunk,Transhumanism in fiction, andPosthumanism. D'Amato is the son ofNorthwestern Law professor Anthony D'Amato and mystery novelistBarbara D'Amato.[2]
