Its inhabitants areBreitenbachois. Its official name distinguishes it fromBreitenbach, Bas-Rhin.
The place name appears in thirteenth-century documents, and is composed of the wordsbreit ("wide") andbach ("stream"). The valley in which it lies was a possession of theAbbey of Munster until theFrench Revolution.
