Balanops is a group offlowering plants described as a genus in 1871.[3][4] The nine species aretrees orshrubs, found inNew Caledonia,Fiji,Vanuatu, and northernQueensland.[5] They aredioecious, with separate male and female plants.[6]
The genus by itself constitutes thefamilyBalanopaceae (formerly the spellingBalanopsidaceae was also used). It is placed in the orderMalpighiales and is related toChrysobalanaceae,Dichapetalaceae,Euphroniaceae andTrigoniaceae.
