Aijia Lise Grammer (née Guttman; born June 26, 1986) is an American singer and songwriter from Los Angeles, California.[1][2] Her self-released extended play under the titleLearning to Let Go was released in 2012. She has worked as a touring singer forSelena Gomez,Colbie Caillat,Hilary Duff,Jack Black and her husbandAndy Grammer.

Early life

Aijia was born Aijia Lise Guttman on June 26, 1986, in Los Angeles, California. She took part in choir shows and talent shows from school age.[2]

Aijia is the maternal granddaughter to Helen Guttman, former owner of Anti Club; formerly located in Melrose Hill in Los Angeles.[3][4] Anti Club hosted bands such asRed Hot Chili Peppers,System of a Down,Weezer,Faith No More,Sonic Youth, and The Cult.[5][6][7][8]

Her paternal grandfather was head of the Jazz Piano Dept at theUniversity of Southern California.

She is the paternal niece of the voiceover actress and fellow alumni ofThe VoiceE.G. Daily .[1]

Education

An alumnus ofCalifornia State University, Northridge, she majored in Jazz Studies. While studying she started an internship atWarner Records supplementing her learning with that of publicity, marketing, and A&R.[2]

Personal life

She married recording artistAndy Grammer in July 2012 in Fullerton, California.[9]

Her and her husband have two daughters, Louisiana K and Israel Blue.[10][11][12][13][14]

She met her husband atCalifornia State University, Northridge where they were both enrolled as music students.[15][16][17]

Musical career

Grammer began teaching piano lessons to children, playing local gigs in her native Los Angeles, and writing music for commercials, trailers, and TV.[2] She went on to singing backing vocals for other artists includingSelena Gomez,Colbie Caillat,Hilary Duff,Jack Black,Rachel Platten and her husbandAndy Grammer.[18] In 2011, Aijia played for the U.S. troops on a USO tour throughout Iraq, Kuwait, Kosovo, and Germany.[9] Under the performing name of Aijia, Grammer self-released her debut EP titledLearning to Let Go in 2012.[19] This was followed in 2018 and 2019 respectively by singles "For You" and "Magic".[20][21][22][23]

Grammer is also an ambassador for the Los Angeles chapter ofRock and Roll Camp for Girls, a non-profit organization that describes itself as "a social justice organization empowering girls through music education."[24] Other notable ambassadors includeSara Bareilles,Katy Perry,Andra Day,Patty Schemel,Shirley Manson andKeala Settle.[25]

Grammer lists her influences includingAlicia Keys,Sia, andAmy Winehouse. Her preferred equipment on stage is the Korg SV-1 88-Key Stage Vintage Piano.[24]

Entertainment industry career

She starred in a production ofAndrew Lloyd Webber's,Jesus Christ Superstar in Los Angeles in 2006.[26][9] In 2010 she starred as the part of Angela in The Alliance Theater's production of Twist: An American Musical, staged byDebbie Allen.[27]In the 2010s Grammer played roles in short films, includingDrew's 5th Birthday,Girls Night, andThe First Step directed by Donnie Hobbie and Ally Zonsius, and Michael A. MacRae respectively.[28][29][30]

In 2016 she appeared onSeason 10 of American singing competition television seriesThe Voice.[31][32][33]

Her first feature-length appearance was as Kristin inSnare directed by Khu and Justin Price, also in 2016.[34]In 2019, Grammer joined the casting department of the American songwriting competition seriesSongland as a talent producer during their first season.[35]
