Abderrahmane Sissako (Arabic :عبد الرحمن سيساكو ; born 13 October 1961) is aMauritanian -bornMalian film director and producer. His filmWaiting for Happiness (Heremakono ) was screened at the2002 Cannes Film Festival official selection underUn Certain Regard ,[ 1] winning aFIPRESCI Prize . His 2006 filmBamako received much attention. Sissako's themes includeglobalisation , exile and the displacement of people. His 2014 filmTimbuktu was selected to compete for thePalme d'Or in the main competition section at the2014 Cannes Film Festival [ 2] and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.[ 3]
Sissako was born inKiffa ,Mauritania , in 1961.[ 4] : 191 [ 5] : 69 His father is aMalian fromSokolo .[ 4] : 195 He spent his childhood in Mali,[ 5] : 69 then returned to Mauritania at age 18 to live with his mother.[ 6] : 19 She died on the last day of filming of Sissako's 2002 filmWaiting for Happiness ; the film is dedicated to her.[ 4] : 196 He left forMoscow in 1983 with a scholarship to study cinema at theGerasimov Institute of Cinematography ,[ 4] : 47, 191 [ 5] : 69 where he made his graduation film,The Game , in 1988.[ 4] : 192 After twelve years in Moscow, Sissako moved toParis in 1994.[ 6] : 19
Besides his work as a director, he also worked as a cultural Advisor for former head of stateMohamed Ould Abdel Aziz .[ 7]
Sissako is married to the Ethiopian film directorMaji-da Abdi .[ 8]
In December 2023, alongside 50 other filmmakers, Sissako signed an open letter published inLibération demanding a ceasefire and an end to the killing of civilians amid the2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip , and for a humanitarian corridor into Gaza to be established for humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages.[ 9] [ 10] [ 11]
