The1961 International League was aClass AAA baseball season played between April 17 and September 22. Eight teams played a 154-game schedule, with the top four teams qualifying for the post-season.

TheBuffalo Bisons won theGovernors' Cup, defeating theRochester Red Wings in the final round of the playoffs.

Team changes

TheRochester Red Wings ended their affiliation with theSt. Louis Cardinals and began an affiliation with theBaltimore Orioles.
TheMontreal Royals relocated toSyracuse, New York and were renamed theSyracuse Chiefs. The club also ended their affiliation with theLos Angeles Dodgers and began an affiliation with theMinnesota Twins.
TheMiami Marlins relocated toSan Juan, Puerto Rico and were renamed theSan Juan Marlins. The club also ended their affiliation with theBaltimore Orioles and began an affiliation with theSt. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins would eventually relocate once again during the season toCharleston, West Virginia and be renamed theCharleston Marlins.
TheToronto Maple Leafs ended their affiliation with theCleveland Indians.

TheColumbus Jets finished with the best record in the league for the first time in franchise history.
On May 19, TheSan Juan Marlins relocated toCharleston, West Virginia and became theCharleston Marlins.^[1]
On September 11, theRochester Red Wings andToronto Maple Leafs held a one-game playoff for the final playoff position. The Red Wings defeated the Maple Leafs 12-11 in ten innings to clinch the final post-season berth.^{[citation needed]}
