The 2000 Pool A Women's World Championship was held at the HersheyCentre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada from April 3-9, 2000. This 6thIIHF Women's World Hockey Championship also featured six satellitegames in these cities within Ontario: Barrie, Kitchener, London, NiagaraFalls, Oshawa, and Peterborough.
Team Canada is World Champion for the 6th time in row. They defeatedTeam USA by a score of 3-2 in an exciting come from behind overtime win.Team Finland outscored Team Sweden 7-1 to claim the bronze medal.
The top six teams from this championship qualify automatically for the2002 Winter Olympics (Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Russia, and China).The bottom two teams in this World Championship (Germany and Japan)will play against the top two teams from the2000 Pool B World Championship (Kazakstan and Switzerland) inFebruary 2001 to determine the final two competitors for the 2002Winter Olympics.
The team that finished last in this World Championship (Japan) willmove down to the B Pool World Championship for next year, while thewinner of the B Pool World Championship (Kazakstan) will move up to theA Pool.
