(last updated 8/20/2022) Since 1926 (when the US highway system was originally commissioned), US 77 has run through Oklahoma City, and US 75 has run through Tulsa. But for the next four decades, there were no north-south US routes serving the area betweenOklahoma's two largest cities. Regionally-important smaller cities like Stillwater and Ada were not served by any US routes, and Shawnee was served only by east-west US 270. US 177 existed, but at the time it was only a 40-mile long connector route between the US 77 and US 81 corridors.
