It’s official: A presidential candidate from Massachusetts has chosen a former Twin Cities resident as her running mate.
Dr. Jill Stein, a presidential nominee for the Green Party, passed over comedienne Roseanne Barr this month and picked Philadelphia anti-poverty organizer Cheri Honkala as the party’s nominee for vice president of the United States.
Stein, a 62-year-old internist from Lexington, Mass., handily beat Barr and won the party’s endorsement during its July 14 convention in Baltimore, setting her up for a rematch of sorts. Stein won 3 percent of the vote in the 2002 race for governor of Massachusetts, losing to future Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Stein introduced Honkala, 49, as her running mate during the convention while promoting her “Green New Deal for America” platform.
Honkala, who grew up in poverty in Minneapolis, formed the Twin Cities anti-poverty groups “Women, Work and Welfare” and “Up and Out of Poverty Now” in the mid-1980s before moving to Philadelphia, where she has continued to advocate for living wages and welfare rights.
Stein is the first Green Party presidential candidate to qualify for federal matching funds by raising at least $5,000 in qualifying donations in each of at least 20 states.
In St. Paul, political organizer Jim Ivey said the party has started its ballot access petition efforts with Stein and Honkala as the listed candidates.
