De nombreux efforts sont déployés pour offrir aux étudiants une formation de la plus haute qualité. Les doctorants sont très bien conseillés sur la manière de se préparer au mieux au marché du travail international afin d'obtenir le meilleur placement.

Avec deux années de cours doctoraux avancés et deux années (ou trois) de recherche à plein temps.
La "voie doctorale" du Master 2 ETE permet aux étudiants d’acquérir des bases solides et avancées en théorie économique (Micro, Macro et Econométrie) avant de choisir leur domaine spécifique de recherche. Pendant cette année, les étudiants sont aussi formés aux méthodes de la recherche et ils doivent rédiger, sous la direction d’un tuteur membre du corps professoral, un mémoire de master qui sera évalué par un jury de professeurs lors d’une présentation orale.
C’est l’ultime année de cours doctoraux avancés Diplôme d’économie approfondie et recherche (MRes). Les doctorants doivent choisir sept sujets dans la liste des cours spécialisés offerts, suivre un groupe de travail annuel dans leur domaine de recherche.
Cette formation intensive à la recherche et par la recherche procure aux doctorants une solide fondation pour l’écriture de leurs papiers de recherche et leur future carrière de chercheurs. Ils sont assistés, dans leurs choix, par leur directeur de thèse et un autre professeur.
Durant cette deuxième année, les étudiants peuvent choisir leur spécialité de recherche :
A la fin de l’année de DEAR les doctorants doivent présenter devant un jury de professeurs l’état d’avancement de leurs travaux de recherche.
Pendant les 2 ou 3 années suivantes, les étudiants se consacrent à l’écriture de leur thèse à temps plein. C’est l’occasion pour eux de mûrir leur intuition et leur technique d’économiste. Les “thésards” sont partie intégrante du pôle de recherche en économie de TSE et assistent ou interviennent dans le cadre des séminaires. Ils présentent leur travail de recherche lors de séminaires juniors et des conférences internationales et sont incités à participer à des écoles d’été spécialisées. Enfin, le doctorat est attribué après soutenance publique de la thèse qui doit contenir au moins 3 articles publiables (évalués préalablement par deux rapporteurs extérieurs).
Il faut généralement 5 ans pour que les étudiants terminent leur thèse.
Les candidats sont très bien accompagnés par leur(s) directeurs/trices de thèse et par le/la reponsable du placement pour aborder au mieux le Job Market International.

Pour les étudiants diplômés du Master 2 ETEet continuant en programme doctoral, l'école s'assure qu'ils reçoivent un financement pendant quatre ans. Certains postes d'assistant pédagogique et d'assistant de recherche sont également disponibles.

"I enjoyed the diversity and academic environment here. Students and researchers are coming from all over the world and doing research in various fields, each contributing in a unique way to the diverse culture here. The research environment is of first grand; each year, top researchers around the world visit and give talks at Toulouse, giving us plenty of opportunities to be exposed to the research frontier. The researchers/advisors are really great economists and patient teachers; discussions on our work are usually deep and focusing on the big picture and economic applications, which I find are the most important part of economics research. Of course, the city is truly beautiful!
Some deals are too good to be true but TSE defies this adage. One gets to live in a great city and have access to one of the best economics departments. TSE has a big PHD program with roughly 20 incoming students each year, which makes you feel like a part of the community. I was part of the Macro group and learned a lot through interactions with the faculty members and other students. And this interaction was not just limited to internal members as the PhD students interact a lot with the visiting seminar speakers (and there are a lot of them at TSE!!).
In terms of the timeline, one spends the first two years on coursework. The core courses are interesting and give a good foundation for research, both in terms of material covered as well as to develop research agenda. I got good support from my advisor as well as other faculty members to keep my work on track throughout the PhD. For the job market, TSE has a professional team of people, comprising of staff members and faculty, who help you throughout the job market season. The hard work that TSE puts in to prepare its students is amply reflected in the placements!!"

"I did my Ph.D. at TSE from 2011 until 2016 (plus a strong M1 a year prior). Coming from Peru to Europe for the first time, a lot was new, exciting, and different. Language-wise, for instance, classes were in English, while daily life was in French. To make this harder, coursework at TSE is tough and exams are intense. However, I can say with the benefit of hindsight, that such level of rigor makes TSE alumni well equipped to face the challenges of a dynamic world. Les étudiants en doctorat qui intègrent le programme ENTER passent de trois mois à un an dans une ou deux des institutions du réseau où ils ont exactement le même statut que les autres doctorants. Selon leur situation ils peuvent soit suivre des cours ou séminaires, soit travailler à leur thèse sous la direction d'un des professeurs de l'université. Ils sont ainsi en contact avec un corps professoral plus vaste et des thèmes de recherche plus diversifiés. Ils peuvent aussi développer des relations professionnelles fructueuses avec les autres étudiants et devenir ainsi des économistes vraiment européens.
Ce réseau organise chaque année une conférence annuelle tournante dans une université membre et favorise les visites et séjours des doctorants dans une (ou plusieurs) université(s) du réseau.
