About the Law Library

The Alaska State Court Law Library serves the legal information needs of Alaskans by selecting, organizing, and facilitating access to legal research resources and court system information. The main library collection and statewide administration is at the Anchorage law library, but library services are available to people throughout the state.

Anchorage Law Library

The main branch of the Alaska State Court Law Library is in Anchorage. The print collection includes Alaska legislative history materials, treatises on a broad swath of legal subjects, previous editions of some treatises, federal documents related to the law, and a small archival collection of materials related to Alaska legal history and Alaskan attorneys. Law libraries statewide are administered from Anchorage. SeeLocations and Hours for additional information.

Fairbanks & Juneau Law Libraries

Branch libraries in Fairbanks and Juneau have smaller print collections and staff to help navigate both the print and electronic materials. SeeLocations and Hours for additional information.

Electronic Materials and Law Library Kiosks

Law Library public kiosks are located in most courthouses throughout the state, and provide access to the same electronic resources statewide. Additional assistance is provided through the Law Library Helpline. Please contact the local court for information on library kiosks.

Alaska Statutes and Alaska Rules of Court are available for public use at all court locations. Please contact thelocation for more information.

  • current and superseded Alaska laws (AS), regulations (AAC), and court rules
  • Alaska appellate decisions published in the Pacific Reporter
  • pre-statehood decisions of Alaska's territorial courts
  • decisions from several Alaska state agencies
  • Alaska Supreme Court briefs (1960-current)
  • Alaska Court of Appeals briefs (1980-current)

The Alaska State Court Law Library is staffed by professional librarians and paraprofessional library assistants.Library staff can provide you with help using the library's public computers, copiers, or catalog. We can also provide general research assistance, help you locate a specific document, or assist you with legislative history research.

Note: Library staff cannot give legal advice, interpret the law for you, tell you how to proceed in a court action or do legal research for you. Please see our"How Can Law Library Staff Help You?" section below and ourlegal research and advice policy and for more information.

How can library staff help you?

  • Library staff can:
    • Explain how to use legal research tools
    • Help you locate a particular statute or case when you have a specific reference or citation
    • Direct you to sources of law, including statutes and cases
    • Direct you to books containing forms and court rules
    • Recommend sources to begin your research
    • Direct you to materials for your school assignment
    • Refer you to agencies
  • Library staff cannot:
    • Give legal advice
    • Interpret the meaning of statutes, cases or regulations
    • Select statutes, cases or regulations for your situation
    • Choose specific forms or language to use in forms
    • Tell you how to file a document, what document to file, or how to proceed with court actions
    • State opinions on legal matters
    • Do legal research for you
