A brass-colored mineral, FeS2, occurring widely and used as an iron ore and in producing sulfur dioxide for sulfuric acid. Also called fool's gold, iron pyrites.

Pyrite is present mainly in the form of framboidalpyritic pellets that may aggregate to larger pellets (Figure 6(e)) and disseminated fine euhedral crystals (Figure 6(f)).
The access for these seems to be on the underlie of the chalcopyrite veins at points where these could be excavated through the softer and partly decomposedpyritic shales and slates coinciding with areas where the local water table had been lowered due to fracturing and previous solution of the sulphide veins.
Pyritic sulphur and most of organic sulphur are unstable at high temperature and convert into SOx and H2S.
On this ridge outcrops of green and blackpyritic shale (Norwood Member-Antrim Shale) overlie carbonate beds (Whiskey Creek Fm.).
