Since first coming on the scene in 1988 with her self titled album she has gone to be considered by of the finest songwriters of her generation. I loved her debut album and Tracy Chapmans style of songwriting, I spent a lot of time immersed in her records and was thrilled at the thought of seeing her live for the first time. The venue was a sweet and quaint venue, perfect for a lyricist of Tracys caliber. She was an artist that I really wanted to listen too and I was delighted to be seeing her in such a setting. She gave a wonderfully soulful performance, she took to the stage for the best part of two hours and played a number of new songs as well as the classic songs ‘Fast Car’ , ’Baby Can I hold You’ and ‘Talkin’ Bout a Revolution’. Her voice is still remarkable! Soulful, unique and distinctive, she is one of the few artists who actually sounds better live. Her band was relatively simple consisting of only 4 other musicians but they played well together and managed to create a raw and stripped down sound. She chatted between songs and gave the audience an insight into the roots of her songs. Many of her older ones had their roots in the social injustices that surround her whilst she was growing up. Her newer songs were far more light hearted and showed a different side to her. The show was certainly on the ‘calm’ side but despite this it was a powerful performance by a wonderful artist.
