A square of turf, the green canvas for a white-painted dot, is set to join Phar Lap's heart and Don Bradman's batting pads as the newest Australian sporting artifact.
The grassy piece of history is the penalty spot from which John Aloisi launched the kick that earlier this month propelled the Socceroos to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
Aloisi scored the winning penalty in Australia's 4-2 shootout win over Uruguay in Sydney after the sides had tied in open play with an aggregate score of 1-1 over two legs.
The win earned the team its first appearance in 31 years in soccer's biggest tournament and saw a previously indifferent nation go soccer mad.
The historic spot will be cut from the Telstra Stadium pitch on Wednesday morning in a special ceremony.
The square will be dry-frozen over a period of weeks to dry it out totally to preserve both soil and turf.
Before the famous penalty spot is treated and encased in glass to protect it from the ravages of time, a member of the first Australian team to attempt World Cup in 1965 will take a final ceremonial penalty-kick then remove the turf.
In the 1965 campaign Australia were beaten by surprise package North Korea 9-2 on aggregate, who went onto beat Italy before losing 5-3 in an epic struggle with genius playmaker Eusebio's Portugal.
In stark comparison to coach Guus Hiddink's intensive training camps, the only preparation for the games was some fitness training in tropical Queensland and a friendly with flyweights Cambodia.
Australia's only appearance in the World Cup was in 1974 where they drew Chile, East and West Germany in the group stage and failed to win a match, although they held the South Americans 0-0.
Wednesday's ceremony is a joint venture between Telstra Stadium and governing body Football Federation Australia but it was the brainchild of stadium chief executive Ken Edwards.
Edwards was inspired by the preservation of part of the pitch that played host to Johnny Wilkinson's memorable Rugby World Cup-winning drop goal in 2003, according to stadium spokesman Kyle Patterson.
"Of course, this World Cup football match went beyond that because it had a much bigger impact internationally and across Australia and because you had a spot, a definite spot, where you know the last kick of the game occurred," Patterson said.
"Ken Edwards in the aftermath of the night said 'this is such a monumental occasion, we really need to, for posterity, do something that will allow us to have a permanent reminder'."
