A village inArgyllshire, Strachur (also Clachan Strachur) lies on Strachur Bay an inlet on the eastern shore ofLoch Fyne. A church built in 1789 dominates the village while on a nearby hill stands the Caillaich Bheir ("The Old Wife of Thunder"), a stone that is believed to have the power to move from hill top to hill top. A ferry acrossLoch Fyne once operated fromCreggans where an inn built in 1863 still stands and Strachur developed in association with forestry and tourism. Strachur House, the former home of soldier and author Sir Fitzroy Maclean (1911-96), was built in the 1780s. A blacksmith's smiddy operated from 1790s to the 1950s.
