Vote yes on state Propositions 69, 71 and 72

In November 2016, the last time California voters had to review state ballot measures, they faced a whopping17 proposals of varying complexity. This June 5, thankfully, there are only five measures, and three are no-brainers deserving of voters’ support.
Proposition 69 would write into the California Constitution a ban on using the new vehicle fee and diesel taxes approved by the Legislature last year for anything but transportation needs. Given past diversions of fuel taxes, this is an excellent idea. That it is being pushed to help blunt the Republican attempt to repeal the overall fuel tax hike enacted in 2017 isn’t a good reason to oppose it.
Proposition 71 would fix a glitch in state law that lets ballot measures that seem to have won approval take effect the day after an election — before all votes are counted and voting tallies are official. This measure would require the secretary of state to certify passage before any proposition takes effect.
Proposition 72 would allow homeowners to add rainwater capture systems without facing a property tax reassessment and higher levies. A case can be made that simple tax codes without such carve-outs are best, but a far stronger argument is that drought-plagued California should incentivize water conservation however it can.
These three measures deserve every voter’s support. Vote yes on state Propositions 69, 71 and 72.
