Unbeatable, an upcoming rhythm game fromBalatropublisher Playstack, was set to launch Thursday, Nov. 6. With only half a day to release, developer D-Cell Games announced that it is delaying the game until Dec. 9, due to a game-breaking bug found during final QA testing.
Unbeatable is a stylish rhythm-adventure game that has a long development history. It was first announced back in 2018 and enjoyed a successful Kickstarter campaign to help fund its development. Since then, the game has gotten a fewhigh-profile trailer placements during streaming showcases like Gamescom Opening Night Live that have earned it a bit of hype. While it was set to drop tomorrow on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, D-Cell made the call to delay it on the eve of its launch.
In a message sent to the studio's Discord server, asspotted by Wario64, that has since beenposted to Steam, the decision to move it back a month was made "a few hours" before the news was shared. (Director RJ Lake says that the announcement post was written and posted in the same meeting where D-Cell decided to delay.) According to Lake, the move was made due to a bug that would have pushed back the game's console launch.
"There’s a very boring and frustrating reason; QA hit a low-repro progression blocker last night that’s serious enough it’s considered unreleasable," Lake writes. "Fixing this would require pushing the console release date back because of cert timelines, andnotfixing this is, well. We refuse to do that. We’re fixing it."
Rather than fracturing its console and PC launch, D-Cell Games opted to push both back to avoid a "messy" release. As for why it's being pushed back a full month, Lake notes that the studio is trying to avoid clashing with other game release dates, saying that the original Nov. 6 date was a "small little island." (It's the same thinking that caused awave of indie game delays back in August, whenHollow Knight: Silksongrevealed its surprised release date with just a few weeks notice.) Lake says that D-Cell Games will use the extra breathing room to fine-tune a few things it had yet to get to pre-launch.
Unbeatablewill now launch on Dec. 9 for PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
