Sony'sPlayStation Portal handheld now fully supports Cloud Streaming, letting owners of the device play games likeAstro Bot,Fortnite, andGrand Theft Auto 5 via the cloud — without having to connect directly to a PlayStation 5.
When the PS Portal was released in 2023, the handheld relied on Sony's Remote Play feature to play PS5 games. The device needed to connect to your console over the internet, requiring a strong connection, to play your PS5 library.
Cloud Streaming (which has been in beta since November 2024) will now let PlayStation Portal users play their games directly from Sony's streaming servers, provided they have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. That's the top tier of Sony's PS Plus subscription offerings, and costs $159.99 per year or $17.99 per month.
PS Plus Premium and Cloud Streaming will offer access to "hundreds of compatible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog," Sony says, including hits likeCyberpunk 2077,God of War Ragnarök,Hogwarts Legacy, andThe Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Here's thefull list of PlayStation Portal Cloud Streaming-compatible games.
The addition of Cloud Streaming will let PS Portal users "enjoy a game side-by-side with a friend who’s using your PS5 under a separate account, or stream your favorite game while someone else watches a movie on the console," Takuro Fushimi, senior manager for product management at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in a post on thePlayStation Blog.
Wednesday's update for PlayStation Portal comes with other new features, including a redesigned user interface, 3D audio support, and a network status screen to better understand your internet connection quality. Via Cloud Streaming, Portal owners can now browse and purchase through in-game stores, receive game invitations, and access new accessibility options.
PlayStation Portal costs $199.99 and comes in Midnight Black and white.
