An official Nintendo Store app has finally been released on mobile, allowing players to shop games, accessories, and other merchandise on their phone. The Android and iOS app was previously only available in Japan, but has now launched for most major regions, excluding Australia and New Zealand.
This marks yet another application in the lineup from Nintendo, joining Nintendo Music, Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, the Nintendo Switch app, andnews platform Nintendo Today. Contrary to what one might think, none of these previous releases — even the Nintendo Switch app, bafflingly — allowed access to the eShop.
Though the performance of theNintendo eShop has improved somewhat on the Switch 2, this new app is a much more convenient way for players to browse games. The app description also lists a few other features besides making purchases, like receiving notifications about game sales for titles on players' Wish Lists, and redeeming My Nintendo points. It can also be used to check in at official Nintendo stores and events to earn "related rewards," though it's not clear what these entail.
Perhaps the best feature, though, is one many wouldn't have expected to appear in a shopping app: The ability to review detailed play activity. Instead of the rough estimations given on Switch systems, players can now view every single play session they've had with a game. Previously, this option was only available through setting up parental controls and viewing activity that way.
Even better, if players link their Nintendo Network ID, they can also view their gaminghistory across the Wii U and 3DS — however, this activity has only been logged up until February 2020, and unlike the Switch data, it doesn't list individual play sessions. Even so, this new feature included in the Nintendo Store app is like a nerdy trip down memory lane, bringing back nostalgic echoes of gameplay from over a decade ago.
