Ever since it was announced in early 2024 thatDisney acquired a stake in Epic Games and would be creating a "new persistent universe" inFortnite, fans have been waiting to find out what that means. We still don't know what that will look like, butDisneyland Game Rush is filling that gap for a limited time.

The newFortnitecreative island launched Friday, Nov. 6 in the game, themed toDisneyland Resort — comprised of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The addition celebrates the 70th anniversary of Disneyland, with a number of games themed to some of thetheme park's most popular attractions. And, while Disney has confirmed this new island is not part of the previously announced expanded agreement, there's plenty to do here that should please fans of the Mouse House.

The entire mode is set in the esplanade between the two theme parks, located in Anaheim, Cal. That's where you meet your fellow competitors, acquire mode-exclusive cosmetics, answer Disney trivia questions, and since it'sFortnite, dance to intimidate your opponents. The esplanade serves asDisneyland Game Rush's version ofFortnite's spawn island, where you are dropped between games. The esplanade is fun to explore, especially if you're a Disneyland veteran. The real fun is in the five new games themed to Disneyland Resort attractions, though. In addition to classic rides, there are also games based on Marvel and Star Wars attractions. Polygon had the opportunity to go hands-on with the new mode and, while it's certainly not battle royale, it's a somewhat basic, yet really fun addition to theFortnitesuite of games.

And they all revolve around the same basic goal of acquiring as many coins as possible. There are a number of different types of coins to collect. Some will add to your score in each game, while others unlock the aforementioned cosmetics, which are different types of hats. Each game will also have a special Disneyland key hidden in it that only one competitor can grab. That key allows them to unlock a golden version of one of the cosmetics. Unfortunately, none of these will transfer out ofDisneyland Game Rush, so don't expect to be running around Springfield duringSimpsons season with Minnie Mouse ears on your head.

While the experiences offered inDisneyland Game Rush are rather basic, they're all very well-themed and engaging. Many of them feature voices and music from the rides themselves, while the design of the games does what it can to drop you into the attraction's setting.

Here are the games available inDisneyland Game Rush at launch:

  • Star Wars Stormtrooper Showdown
    • A basic horde shooter, except you are in the Rise of the Resistance attraction taking out Stormtroopers and Kylo Ren. There is a lightsaber or two hidden on the level that will be much more exciting to use than the run-of-the-mill blaster you're equipped with.
  • WEB Slingers: Spider-Bot Blaster
    • This one's also a horde shooter, but arguably more fun. In Spider-Bot Blaster you are, well, blasting Spider-Bots. Based on WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, you and your competitors work together taking aim at Spider-Bots, racking up as many points as possible. There are hidden rooms around this and the rest of the maps filled with extra coins. The bonus here is that some of the rooms also offer perfect shooting positions that keep you safe from Spider-Bots. And if you take out enough of them before the end of the round, you'll trigger a boss fight against a gigantic Spider-Bot.
  • Space Mountain Rocket Rails
    • While there is little more to this game than grinding around rails in space collecting coins, it's also absurdly fun for those of us who enjoy grinding in other Fortnite modes. It's basically an endless grind fest as you jump from rail to rail, shooting around space.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Sneak Out
    • Much like Rocket Rails, the goal here is to simply run around the level, snagging coins wherever you can. This time, though, it's a platformer set inside the Mission Breakout attraction. Your job is to collect coins and not get killed by the various guards patrolling the hallways. Your only weapon is a stack of Boogie Bombs. Just to make things more confusing, though, your competitors also have them, and they work on everyone, not just the guards.
  • Haunted Mansion Scavenger Haunt
    • Another game with the goal of running around to collect coins and little else, this time set in the Haunted Mansion. The difference here, though, is there is so much to interact with in the house. You can trigger all kinds of items for extra bits of Disneyland goodness, whether it's notable moments in the iconic ride or even little bits of lore being included. Just look for items around the mansion you can interact with. And we'll tell you the same thing Disney told us about this game: try to open every door.
  • Indiana Jones: Tomb Runner
    • This Indiana Jones temple runner is fun but filled with traps that will do some serious damage. From spikes popping out of the ground to arrows shooting from the walls, there's a lot to be on the lookout for in this game. It's also a nightmare playing with keyboard and mouse. So have a controller ready for this one.
  • Matterhorn Slip and Climb
    • The last game on the list is potentially our favorite. Slip and Climb is a basic platformer that sees you attempting to climb Matterhorn Mountain, home of the legendary bobsled ride. You're equipped with a grappling gun that also puts ice blocks on your feet, so be ready for a lot of slipping, sliding, and falling. You get a bonus if you make it to the top of the mountain, but there are plenty of coins to be found if you, instead, just hunt for loot.

There are some interesting attractions missing fromDisneyland Game Rush. It's strange that Pirates of the Caribbean, arguably the most well-known ride property, isn't included. The only other thing that might not live up to any Disneyland-in-Fortnite expectations is that this isn't like Minecraft's Disneyland map. You can't wander the entirety of the theme park, sadly.

You are restricted to the esplanade until loaded into the games. There's plenty to do there, though. If you explore enough, you'll find some railroads to grind on and plenty of Disneyland Easter eggs spread around.

While Disneyland Gamer Rush isn't the "new persistent universe" we've been waiting for, it's a good add-on toFortnitethat could lead to some fun game nights among Disney nerd friends.

Disneyland Game Rush launches onFortniteFriday, Nov. 6. Look for it in the creative menu or search for it with island code: 4617-4819-8826.
