Police have ended internet speculation over the closure of a gay sauna last week after revealing that a 25- year-old man was found dead in the establishment.

The Shoreditch branch of gay sauna chain, Chariots, was closed over the whole Easter bank holiday weekend after a man was found dead in one of the sauna cabins by staff.

Internet bloggers spent the bank holiday suggesting reasons for the closure including allegations of rape, murder or a drug raid.

A spokesman for the spa told the Hackney Gazette: “There was a serious incident on Thursday night and the police couldn’t actually finish the investigation until Tuesday morning so the club was closed all weekend.

“We weren’t held responsible in any way and wed like to extend our deepest sympathies to the chap’s friends and family.”

He said the police had ruled out murder and foul play.

Police praised the company for their cooperation.

A post mortem on the unidentified man was inconclusive and police are waiting for toxicology reports. He is believed to have died of an overdose.

Chariots, which opened in 1996, is described as one of the most popular saunas in London. It hosts a swimming pool, Jacuzzis, steam rooms and a 40 man sauna cabin.
