On November 21, the City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation unveiled its Rocky Balboa statue in Terminal A-West between gates A-15 and A-16. The bronze statue, one of three created by artist A. Thomas Schomberg, is 10-feet tall and sits on a three-foot-tall by four-foot black steel base. Rocky originates from the Rocky movie franchise, which chronicles the boxing journey and triumph of the fictional character Rocky Balboa. Thousands of Philadelphia tourists will now be able to visit the statue at two locations in the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).
“We are incredibly proud to present this statue in partnership with several city departments and many community partners who got us here today,” said Department of Aviation CEO Atif Saeed. “The Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation was instrumental, along with the City’s offices of Creative Philadelphia, the Art Commission, and a number of city departments. I also want to acknowledge the many team members of the Department of Aviation who collaborated with our city partners and managed the delivery and installation.”
Rocky stands as one of Philadelphia's most recognized landmarks and is seen as an emblem of perseverance, strength, and determination.
Schomberg's distinguished sculpture career has spanned five decades, and his works are globally recognized. Among his early supporters was actor Sylvester Stallone, who commissioned Schomberg to create the iconic ROCKY statue for the film Rocky III.
“Rocky is the DNA of this great city of Philadelphia,” said Schomberg. “There’s a little bit of Rocky in all of us. Rocky is not just known here in Philadelphia but is known across this country and the world. I’m glad to be a part of this.”
The unveiling of the Rocky statue concluded with a Rocky look-alike contest, which was judged by Kathryn Ott Lovell, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation; Frank “Frankie” Oliveri, owner of Pat’s King of Steaks; and Bill Doran, superintendent of Laurel Hill Cemetery. Top Rocky impersonator Mike Kunda emceed the contest.
