   Ingredients needed

   Crumbled idli – 3 cups
Onion – 1 cup finely chopped
Green chilli – 1-2 finely chopped
Ginger – 1 inch piece finely chopped
   Turmeric powder – a pinch
Idli Podi– 1 1/2 tsp (optional but highly recommended)
   Salt as required

   For the seasoning

   Oil – 1 1/2 tbsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Urad dal – 3/4 tsp
   Red chillies -2
   Hing – generous pinch
   Curry leaves – a sprig

   For Garnishing

   Coriander leaves
   Fresh lemon juice -1-2 tbsp

Preparation

Refrigerate idlis for 5-6 hours or overnight for best results.

Crumble the idlis coarsely with your fingers tips or you can use the mixie for better results. Cut the idlis into 2-3 pieces and put it in the mixie and pulse it for a few seconds.(Use the whipper button with the normal blade used for dry grinding) The idlis will get crumbled evenly. Keep it aside.

Method

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, urad dal, red chillies, hing and curry leaves.

When dal turns golden brown, add finely chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, turmeric powder, salt needed and saute till onions turns transparent. Then add the crumbled idli, idli podi and mix well. Check for salt.

Garnish with coriander leaves, squeeze juice of fresh lemon and mix well. Serve with hot sambar or chutney. It tastes good as it is without any side dish.

Note – Do not crumble hot idlis as it will not crumble but will end up into a sticky mass. The idlis have to be cold, so that it will get crumbled nicely. You can refrigerate the idlis for 5-6 hours and then pulse it in the mixie. Use the whipper button for few seconds to crumble the idlis evenly.

Idli Upma With Vegetables -You can make this upma more nutritious by adding vegetable as I have done in the video. I have added  1/4 cup chopped carrots and 1/4 cup fresh peas. You can make this upma with or without vegetables. Watch the video to know how to make idli upma with vegetables.

This upma is so delicious that you will find yourself making extra idlis just to prepare this upma.

This recipe inspired us a lot to try & we prepared it in the morning today and it turned out soooo yummy and there was nothing left.It is my all time favourite but never had it with idli podi in it,but adding idli podi gives special& lovely taste to it,we added little more idli podi to it for our personal preference.we wish we could made more thistime as there was much demand for this yummy dish ,and it was not enough for all of us. Next time just to prepare this upma,I am going to get more idly's.Such an easy &quick recipe but unforgettable taste ,still I can use it.
This recipe is very much useful for bachelors like us and thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe.
