WFAN renames 'Boomer and Carton' after resignation: 'It's a sad day'
There is only Boomer now.
WFAN has rebranded the "Boomer and Carton" morning show as the "The Morning Show with Boomer" on the fly afterCraig Carton announced his resignation from the station on Wednesday night, a week after he was arrested on federal securities fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy charges.
It's Boomer Esiason's show now. The ex-Jets quarterback opened Thursday by expressing support for Carton's decision, while again vowing to move forward with the program.
"I think it's a good move for Craig, andI think for he and his family he has got to focus supremely on that," Esiason said, via Newsday's Neil Best. "That's the one thing that he has to take care of, and that's the one thing we want him to do.
"We want him and his family to get through this, and he's going to put all of his energy into that, and by resigning I believe he takes a lot of pressure off of all of us here at WFAN, his co-workers and everything else."
WFAN has erased any ties to Carton, who has maintained he believes he will be found not guilty, on its website, in the show's studio and elsewhere. The duo had recently celebrated the show's 10-year anniversary.
"It's a sad day. It's the end of 'Boomer and Carton.' For 10 years I sat next to somebody who I think, and I still believe this, is one of the greatest personalities, radio personalities, that we'll have ever seen," Esiason said. "And I certainly had the privilege for 10 years to sit next to him and watch him do his thing every single day for four hours."
Esiason hosted Thursday's show with Jerry Recco. He's also had ex-Giants quarterback Phil Simms and Brandon Tierney guest co-host with him since Carton's arrest.
Carton, 48, was arrested Sept. 6 and charged with helping to run a multi-million-dollar Ponzi scheme in order to pay off gambling debts. FBI agents nabbed him at his New York home before he could travel to work for that day's "Boomer and Carton" program.
WFAN suspended Carton following his arrest.
"I wouldn't be surprised if someday, somewhere, somehow, he'll be behind a microphone. I don't know where. I don't know when," Esiason said. "I don't know if I'll be a part of that or not. But I do know that he has resigned from WFAN, so that chapter at least, the 'Boomer and Carton' chapter, is now closed here."
