Local leaders in New Jersey getting ready to take oath
Although New Year's Day is a legal holiday, with municipal buildings and county courthouses closed, some town halls will be open for several hours to host municipal reorganization meetings and swearing-in ceremonies for newly elected mayors and council members.
Among the notable ceremonies taking place today are those in Edison, Morristown and Parsippany.
In Edison, the first female mayor in the township's history -- Antonia "Toni" Ricigliano -- is scheduled to take the oath of office today, ending the four-year reign of the township's first Asian-American mayor, Jun Choi.
In Morristown, Democrat Tim Dougherty, who stunned incumbent Mayor Donald Cresitello during the June primary election and defeated Republican James Gervasio in the November general election, will take the oath of office today.
In Parsippany, the mayor's office will be controlled by a Republican for the first time in nearly 15 years as Councilman Jamie Barberio gets sworn in at noon. Barberio defeated Democratic incumbent Mayor Michael Luther in a tight race in November that had each candidate pinning their hopes on absentee ballots.
Oaths of office will also be administered today to mayors in East Orange, Hanover, Plainfield, Randolph and Union.
