Hot Pools & Health Spas

Soak in naturally-heated thermal pools surrounded by mountains, forests and lakes.

New Zealand sits on two tectonic plates that cause warm water to bubble up through the earth’s crust and form hot pools. For centuries locals have enjoyed these hot pools, believing that sitting in them is good for absorbing minerals, boosting circulation, reducing stress, and easing pain.

Great Barrier Island

TheKaitoke Hot Springs Trail(opens in new window) on Great Barrier Island takes you to natural thermal pools tucked away in the forest. These free-to-visit hot pools are a fantastic spot for unwinding and enjoying nature, making them an ideal destination for a peaceful outdoor retreat.

West Coast

The most southern hot pool can be found at Welcome Flat in Westland. This pool is free to use but you’ll have to work for it. Follow the Copland Track for seven hours until you come to a Department of Conservation (DOC) hut and campsite. The pools are a short walk from the hut and have one of the best wilderness views in New Zealand.
