DAILY Friday, September 2, 1966 REPORTER, POLICE 'Give By LADD NEUMAN Daily News Staff Writer "Say something, said the lanky Negro with the black dew rag (bandana) on his head. "Give me a reason to knife you." He was speaking to me. He was one of about a dozen youths I had seen carrying shoe boxes looted from Bob's Men's Shoes about 12:45 p.m. Police had caught several of them. But, most apparently had gotten away.
Spotting at least two youths I could identify in the theft, I pounded on a locked glass door at Mayor's Jewelry store, and told a man inside to call the police. "WE'RE CLOSED." he said over and over. the cops," I repeated over and over. "Why?" he asked. I never answered him.
A voice behind me asked: "Who you wantin' to call the cops?" "He seen us earlier," another yelled. That's when the big man with the bandana decided to threaten. Trying to run me, he said, "I'm gonna use it anyway." I NEVER saw the knife as he dug into his pocket. But another reporter told me the youth was waving what looked like one as he chased me west on Third St. He gave up the chase after halt a block.
CATCH LOOTERS NEWS Me a Reason to Knife You' Leading his mob back to Third and Main he turned south on Main. There, two more reporters saw them have words with an old man who was carrying a cane and wearing glasses. "He (the man with the black dew rag) reached down and grabbed the cane from the old man," said one reporter. "HE KICKED the old man in the stomach and then socked him in the left ear with his right hand. Then he gave him the cane back." The reporter directed police who followed the mob onto S.
Ludlow St. where they corralled them. I met police there. "This is the right bunch," said, indicating the group. "But the big one with the black bandana isn't here." "THERE HE goes," velled a policeman, pointing towards a running figure across the street.
"He's the one who beat up an old man." They caught him at the corner of Fourth and Ludlow Sts. Police are holding the entire group -about six or eight, for further questioning. The Negro group wasn't the only one out to make trouble. After the knife incident, a group of about a dozen white teenagers ran up to me. "No need to run," one of them told me.

He walked past a cluster of Negro men, got into his car and calmly drove away. All the while burglar alarms were jangling.
