| 1Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν εἶπεν ἐν παραβολαῖς αὐτοῖς λέγων:2ὡμοιώθη ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ, ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ.3καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους, καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν.4πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων: εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις: ἰδοὺ τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμακα, οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα, καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα: δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους.5οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον, ὃς μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν, ὃς δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ:6οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν.7ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη, καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσεν τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησεν.8τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ: ὁ μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν, οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι:9πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν, καὶ ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους.10καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας οὓς εὗρον, πονηρούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς, καὶ ἐπλήσθη ὁ γάμος ἀνακειμένων.11εἰσελθὼν δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου:12καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ: ἑταῖρε, πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου; ὁ δὲ ἐφιμώθη.13τότε ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπεν τοῖς διακόνοις: δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἐκβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον: ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων.14πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοὶ ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί. | 1 And Jesus once more spoke to them in parables;2 Here is an image, he said, of the kingdom of heaven; there was once a king, who held a marriage-feast for his son,3 and sent out his servants with a summons to all those whom he had invited to the wedding; but they would not come.4 Then he sent other servants with a fresh summons, bidding them tell those who had been invited, By this, I have prepared my feast, the oxen have been killed, and the fatlings, all is ready now; come to the wedding.5 But still they paid no heed, and went off on other errands, one to his farm in the country, and another to his trading;6 and the rest laid hands upon his servants, and insulted and killed them.7 The king fell into a rage when he heard of it, and sent out his troops to put those murderers to death, and burn their city.8 After this, he said to his servants, Here is the marriage-feast all ready, and those who had been invited have proved unworthy of it.9 You must go out to the street-corners, and invite all whom you find there to the wedding.10 And his servants went out into the streets, where they mustered all they could find, rogues and honest men together; and so the wedding had its full tale of guests.11 But when the king came in to look at the company, he saw a man there who had no wedding-garment on;[1]12 My friend, he said, how didst thou come to be here without a wedding-garment? And he made no reply.13 Whereupon the king said to his servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the darkness, where there shall be weeping, and gnashing of teeth.14 Many are called, but few are chosen.[2] | 1Et respondens Jesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens:2Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.3Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.4Iterum misit alios servos, dicens: Dicite invitatis: Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata: venite ad nuptias.5Illi autem neglexerunt: et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam:6reliqui vero tenuerunt servos ejus, et contumeliis affectos occiderunt.7Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est: et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit.8Tunc ait servis suis: Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni:9ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias.10Et egressi servi ejus in vias, congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt, malos et bonos: et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium.11Intravit autem rex ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali.12Et ait illi: Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem? At ille obmutuit.13Tunc dicit rex ministris: Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores: ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.14Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi. |
| 15Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ.16καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες: διδάσκαλε, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις, καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός, οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων:17εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν, τί σοι δοκεῖ: ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ;18γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπεν: τί με πειράζετε, ὑποκριταί;19ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου. οἱ δὲ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον.20καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: Τίνος ἡ εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἡ ἐπιγραφή;21λέγουσιν: αὐτῷ Καίσαρος. τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς: ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ.22καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν, καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθαν. | 15 After this the Pharisees withdrew, and plotted together, to make him betray himself in his talk.16 And they sent their own disciples to him, with those who were of Herod’s party, and said, Master, we know well that thou art sincere, and teachest in all sincerity the way of God; that thou holdest no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man;17 tell us, then, is it right to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?18 Jesus saw their malice; Hypocrites, he said, why do you thus put me to the test?19 Shew me the coinage in which the tribute is paid. So they brought him a silver piece,20 and he asked them, Whose is this likeness? Whose name is inscribed on it?21 Caesar’s, they said; whereupon he answered, Why then, give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.22 And they went away and left him in peace, full of admiration at his words. | 15Tunc abeuntes pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone.16Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis, dicentes: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo: non enim respicis personam hominum:17dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dare Cæsari, an non?18Cognita autem Jesus nequitia eorum, ait: Quid me tentatis, hypocritæ?19ostendite mihi numisma census. | 23Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Σαδδουκαῖοι, λέγοντες μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν, καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν24λέγοντες: διδάσκαλε, Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν: ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα, ἐπιγαμβρεύσει ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ.25ἦσαν δὲ παρ' ἡμῖν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί, καὶ ὁ πρῶτος γήμας ἐτελεύτησεν, καὶ μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ.26ὁμοίως καὶ ὁ δεύτερος καὶ ὁ τρίτος, ἕως τῶν ἑπτά.27ὕστερον δὲ πάντων ἀπέθανεν ἡ γυνή.28ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὖν τίνος τῶν ἑπτὰ ἔσται γυνή; πάντες γὰρ ἔσχον αὐτήν.29ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: πλανᾶσθε, μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ θεοῦ.30ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται, ἀλλ' ὡς ἄγγελοι ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ εἰσιν.31περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ λέγοντος:32ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ ὁ θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ καὶ ὁ θεὸς Ἰακώβ; οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ θεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων.33καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ. | 23 On that day, too, he was approached with a question by the Sadducees, men who say that there is no resurrection;24 Master, they said, Moses told us, If a man leaves no children when he dies, his brother shall marry the widow by right of kinship, and beget children in the dead brother’s name.[3]25 We had seven brothers once in our country, of whom the first died, a married man without issue, bequeathing his wife to the second.26 And the same befell the second brother, and then the third, and in the end all seven,27 the woman dying last of all.28 And now, when the dead rise again, which of the seven will be her husband, since she was wife to them all?29 Jesus answered them, You are wrong; you do not understand the scriptures, or what is the power of God.30 When the dead rise again, there is no marrying and giving in marriage; they are as the angels in heaven are.31 But now, in the matter of the resurrection, did you never read what God himself said:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?[4] Yet it is of living men, not of dead men, that he is God.33 This the multitude heard, and were amazed by his teaching. | 23In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem: et interrogaverunt eum,24dicentes: Magister, Moyses dixit: Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater ejus uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo.25Erant autem apud nos septem fratres: et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est: et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.26Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum.27Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est.28In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor? omnes enim habuerunt eam.29Respondens autem Jesus, ait illis: Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei.30In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur: sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo.31De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis:32Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.33Et audientes turbæ, mirabantur in doctrina ejus. |
| 34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό,35καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτόν:36διδάσκαλε, ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ;37ὁ δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ: ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου.38αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη ἐντολή.39δευτέρα δὲ ὁμοία αὐτῇ: ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.40ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος ὁ νόμος κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται.41Συνηγμένων δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς42λέγων: τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ; τίνος υἱός ἐστιν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: τοῦ Δαυίδ.43λέγει αὐτοῖς: πῶς οὖν Δαυὶδ ἐν πνεύματι καλεῖ αὐτὸν κύριον λέγων:44εἶπεν κύριος τῷ κυρίῳ μου: κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν σου.45εἰ οὖν Δαυὶδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν κύριον, πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν;46καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο ἀποκριθῆναι αὐτῷ λόγον, οὐδὲ ἐτόλμησέν τις ἀπ' ἐκείνης τῆς ἡμέρας ἐπερωτῆσαι αὐτὸν οὐκέτι. | 34 And now the Pharisees, hearing how he had put the Sadducees to silence, met together;35 and one of them, a lawyer, put a question to try him:36 Master, which commandment in the law is the greatest?37 Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and thy whole soul and thy whole mind.[5]38 This is the greatest of the commandments, and the first.39 And the second, its like, is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.[6]40 On these two commandments, all the law and the prophets depend.41 Then, while the Pharisees were still gathered about him, Jesus asked them:42 What is your opinion concerning Christ? Whose son is he to be? They told him, David’s.43 How is it then, said he, that David is moved by the Spirit to call him Master, when he says:44 The Lord said to my Master, Sit on my right hand while I make thy enemies a footstool under thy feet?[7]45 David calls Christ his Master; how can he be also his son?46 None could find a word to say in answer to him, nor did anyone dare, after that day, to try him with further questions.[8] | 34Pharisæi autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducæis, convenerunt in unum:35et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum:36Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege?37Ait illi Jesus: Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua.38Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum.39Secundum autem simile est huic: Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum.40In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ.41Congregatis autem pharisæis, interrogavit eos Jesus,42dicens: Quid vobis videtur de Christo? cujus filius est? Dicunt ei: David.43Ait illis: Quomodo ergo David in spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens:44Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum?45Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius ejus est?46Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum: neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare. |
[1] Some have suggested that wedding garments were provided at the King’s expense, but it is not certain that any such custom obtained. Like the foolish virgins (cf. 25.3), the man had neglected to make what preparations were in his power. It is the common opinion that the wedding garment represents charity.
