μνήσθητε ὡς ἐλάλησεν ὑμῖν ἔτι ὢν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ,7λέγων τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὅτι δεῖ παραδοθῆναι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ σταυρωθῆναι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστῆναι.8καὶ ἐμνήσθησαν τῶν ῥημάτων αὐτοῦ,9καὶ ὑποστρέψασαι ἀπὸ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπήγγειλαν ταῦτα πάντα τοῖς ἕνδεκα καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς λοιποῖς.10ἦσαν δὲ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ Μαρία καὶ Ἰωάννα καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου, καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ σὺν αὐταῖς ἔλεγον πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους ταῦτα.11καὶ ἐφάνησαν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λῆρος τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα, καὶ ἠπίστουν αὐταῖς.12ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἀναστὰς ἔδραμεν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ παρακύψας βλέπει τὰ ὀθόνια μόνα καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς ἑαυτὸν θαυμάζων τὸ γεγονός1 And at very early dawn on the first day of the week they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared:2 and found the stone already rolled away from the door of the tomb.3 They went into it, and could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.4 They were still puzzling over this, when two men came and stood by them, in shining garments.5 These said to them, as they bowed their faces to the earth in fear, Why are you seeking one who is alive, here among the dead?6 He is not here, he has risen again; remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,7 The Son of Man is to be given up into the hands of sinners, and to be crucified, and to rise again the third day.8 Then they remembered what he had said,9 and returned from the tomb bringing news of all this to the eleven apostles and to all the rest.[1]10 It was Mary Magdalen, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, who told the apostles this;11 but to their minds the story seemed madness, and they could not believe it.12 Only Peter rose up and ran to the tomb, where he looked in, and saw the grave-clothes lying by themselves, and went away full of surmise over what had befallen.[2]1Una autem sabbati valde diluculo venerunt ad monumentum, portantes quæ paraverant aromata:2et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento.3Et ingressæ non invenerunt corpus Domini Jesu.4Et factum est, dum mente consternatæ essent de isto, ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti.5Cum timerent autem, et declinarent vultum in terram, dixerunt ad illas: Quid quæritis viventem cum mortuis?6non est hic, sed surrexit: recordamini qualiter locutus est vobis, cum adhuc in Galilæa esset,7dicens: Quia oportet Filium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum, et crucifigi, et die tertia resurgere.8Et recordatæ sunt verborum ejus.9Et regressæ a monumento nuntiaverunt hæc omnia illis undecim, et ceteris omnibus.10Erat autem Maria Magdalene, et Joanna, et Maria Jacobi, et ceteræ quæ cum eis erant, quæ dicebant ad apostolos hæc.11Et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista, et non crediderunt illis.12Petrus autem surgens cucurrit ad monumentum: et procumbens vidit linteamina sola posita, et abiit secum mirans quod factum fuerat.
13Καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἦσαν πορευόμενοι εἰς κώμην ἀπέχουσαν σταδίους ἑξήκοντα ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ ᾗ ὄνομα Ἐμμαοῦς,14καὶ αὐτοὶ ὡμίλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους περὶ πάντων τῶν συμβεβηκότων τούτων.15καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὁμιλεῖν αὐτοὺς καὶ συζητεῖν, καὶ αὐτὸς Ἰησοῦς ἐγγίσας συνεπορεύετο αὐτοῖς:16οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν ἐκρατοῦντο τοῦ μὴ ἐπιγνῶναι αὐτόν.17εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς: τίνες οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι, οὓς ἀντιβάλλετε πρὸς ἀλλήλους περιπατοῦντες; καὶ ἐστάθησαν σκυθρωποί.18ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἷς, ὀνόματι Κλεοπᾶς, εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν: σὺ μόνος παροικεῖς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως τὰ γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις;19καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: ποῖα; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ: τὰ περὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζαρηνοῦ, ὃς ἐγένετο ἀνὴρ προφήτης δυνατὸς ἐν ἔργῳ καὶ λόγῳ ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ,20ὅπως τε παρέδωκαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἡμῶν εἰς κρίμα θανάτου καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν.21ἡμεῖς δὲ ἠλπίζομεν ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ μέλλων λυτροῦσθαι τὸν Ἰσραήλ: ἀλλά γε καὶ σὺν πᾶσιν τούτοις τρίτην ταύτην ἡμέραν ἄγει ἀφ' οὗ ταῦτα ἐγένετο.22ἀλλὰ καὶ γυναῖκές τινες ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐξέστησαν ἡμᾶς, γενόμεναι ὀρθριναὶ ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον,23καὶ μὴ εὑροῦσαι τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἦλθον λέγουσαι καὶ ὀπτασίαν ἀγγέλων ἑωρακέναι, οἳ λέγουσιν αὐτὸν ζῆν.24καὶ ἀπῆλθόν τινες τῶν σὺν ἡμῖν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ εὗρον οὕτως καθὼς καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες εἶπον, αὐτὸν δὲ οὐκ εἶδον.13 It was on the same day that two of them were walking to a village called Emmaus, sixty furlongs away from Jerusalem,14 discussing all that had happened.15 They were still conversing and debating together, when Jesus himself drew near, and began to walk beside them;16 but their eyes were held fast, so that they could not recognize him.17 And he said to them, What talk is this you exchange between you as you go along, sad-faced?18 And one of them, who was called Cleophas, answered him, What, art thou the only pilgrim in Jerusalem who has not heard of what has happened there in the last few days?19 What happenings? he asked; and they said, About Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet whose words and acts had power with God, and with all the people;20 how the chief priests, and our rulers, handed him over to be sentenced to death, and so crucified him.21 For ourselves, we had hoped that it was he who was to deliver Israel; but now, to crown it all, to-day is the third day since it befell.22 Some women, indeed, who belonged to our company, alarmed us; they had been at the tomb early in the morning23 and could not find his body; whereupon they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.[3]24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found that all was as the women had said, but of him they saw nothing.13Et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum, quod erat in spatio stadiorum sexaginta ab Jerusalem, nomine Emmaus.14Et ipsi loquebantur ad invicem de his omnibus quæ acciderant.15Et factum est, dum fabularentur, et secum quærerent: et ipse Jesus appropinquans ibat cum illis:16oculi autem illorum tenebantur ne eum agnoscerent.17Et ait ad illos: Qui sunt hi sermones, quos confertis ad invicem ambulantes, et estis tristes?18Et respondens unus, cui nomen Cleophas, dixit ei: Tu solus peregrinus es in Jerusalem, et non cognovisti quæ facta sunt in illa his diebus?19Quibus ille dixit: Quæ?
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν τοῦ μεῖναι σὺν αὐτοῖς.30καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ κατακλιθῆναι αὐτὸν μετ' αὐτῶν, λαβὼν τὸν ἄρτον εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἐπεδίδου αὐτοῖς:31αὐτῶν δὲ διηνοίχθησαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν αὐτόν: καὶ αὐτὸς ἄφαντος ἐγένετο ἀπ' αὐτῶν.32καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς ἀλλήλους: οὐχὶ ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν καιομένη ἦν ἐν ἡμῖν, ὡς ἐλάλει ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, ὡς διήνοιγεν ἡμῖν τὰς γραφάς;33Καὶ ἀναστάντες αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ καὶ εὗρον ἠθροισμένους τοὺς ἕνδεκα καὶ τοὺς σὺν αὐτοῖς,34λέγοντας ὅτι ὄντως ἠγέρθη ὁ κύριος καὶ ὤφθη Σίμωνι.35καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐξηγοῦντο τὰ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ ὡς ἐγνώσθη αὐτοῖς ἐν τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου.25 Then he said to them, Too slow of wit, too dull of heart, to believe all those sayings of the prophets!26 Was it not to be expected that the Christ should undergo these sufferings, and enter so into his glory?27 Then, going back to Moses and the whole line of the prophets, he began to interpret the words used of himself by all the scriptures.28 And now they were drawing near the village to which they were walking, and he made as if to go on further;29 but they pressed him, Stay with us, they said; it is towards evening, and it is far on in the day. So he went in to stay with them.30 And then, when he sat down at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and offered it to them;31 whereupon their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and with that, he disappeared from their sight.32 And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning within us when he spoke to us on the road, and when he made the scriptures plain to us?33 Rising up there and then, they went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven apostles and their companions gathered together,34 now saying, The Lord has indeed risen, and has appeared to Simon.[4]35 And they told the story of their encounter in the road, and how they recognized him when he broke bread.25Et ipse dixit ad eos: O stulti, et tardi corde ad credendum in omnibus quæ locuti sunt prophetæ!26Nonne hæc oportuit pati Christum, et ita intrare in gloriam suam?27Et incipiens a Moyse, et omnibus prophetis, interpretabatur illis in omnibus scripturis quæ de ipso erant.28Et appropinquaverunt castello quo ibant: et ipse se finxit longius ire.29Et coëgerunt illum, dicentes: Mane nobiscum, quoniam advesperascit, et inclinata est jam dies.
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς εἰρήνη ὑμῖν37πτοηθέντες δὲ καὶ ἔμφοβοι γενόμενοι ἐδόκουν πνεῦμα θεωρεῖν.38καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: τί τεταραγμένοι ἐστέ, καὶ διὰ τί διαλογισμοὶ ἀναβαίνουσιν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμῶν;39ἴδετε τὰς χεῖράς μου καὶ τοὺς πόδας μου, ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι αὐτός: ψηλαφήσατέ με καὶ ἴδετε, ὅτι πνεῦμα σάρκα καὶ ὀστέα οὐκ ἔχει καθὼς ἐμὲ θεωρεῖτε ἔχοντα.40καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν ἔδειξεν αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας41ἔτι δὲ ἀπιστούντων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῆς χαρᾶς καὶ θαυμαζόντων εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: ἔχετέ τι βρώσιμον ἐνθάδε;42οἱ δὲ ἐπέδωκαν αὐτῷ ἰχθύος ὀπτοῦ μέρος:43καὶ λαβὼν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἔφαγεν.44Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς: οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου οὓς ἐλάλησα πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἔτι ὢν σὺν ὑμῖν, ὅτι δεῖ πληρωθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωϋσέως καὶ τοῖς προφήταις καὶ ψαλμοῖς περὶ ἐμοῦ.45τότε διήνοιξεν αὐτῶν τὸν νοῦν τοῦ συνιέναι τὰς γραφάς.46καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι οὕτως γέγραπται παθεῖν τὸν Χριστὸν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ,47καὶ κηρυχθῆναι ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ μετάνοιαν εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ48ὑμεῖς μάρτυρες τούτων.49καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πατρός μου ἐφ' ὑμᾶς: ὑμεῖς δὲ καθίσατε ἐν τῇ πόλει ἕως οὗ ἐνδύσησθε ἐξ ὕψους δύναμιν.36 While they were speaking of this, he himself stood in the midst of them, and said, Peace be upon you; it is myself, do not be afraid.[5]37 They cowered down, full of terror, thinking that they were seeing an apparition.38 What, he said to them, are you dismayed? Whence come these surmises in your hearts?39 Look at my hands and my feet, to be assured that it is myself; touch me, and look; a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see that I have.40 And as he spoke thus, he shewed them his hands and his feet.41 Then, while they were still doubtful, and bewildered with joy, he asked them, Have you anything here to eat?42 So they put before him a piece of roast fish, and a honeycomb;43 and he took these and ate in their presence and shared his meal with them.[6]44 This is what I told you, he said, while I still walked in your company; how all that was written of me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be fulfilled.45 Then he enlightened their minds, to make them understand the scriptures;46 So it was written, he told them, and so it was fitting that Christ should suffer, and should rise again from the dead on the third day;47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.48 Of this, you are the witnesses.49 And behold, I am sending down upon you the gift which was promised by my Father; you must wait in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.36Dum autem hæc loquuntur, stetit Jesus in medio eorum, et dicit eis: Pax vobis: ego sum, nolite timere.37Conturbati vero et conterriti, existimabant se spiritum videre.38Et dixit eis: Quid turbati estis, et cogitationes ascendunt in corda vestra?39videte manus meas, et pedes, quia ego ipse sum; palpate et videte, quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet, sicut me videtis habere.40Et cum hoc dixisset, ostendit eis manus et pedes.41Adhuc autem illis non credentibus, et mirantibus præ gaudio, dixit: Habetis hic aliquid quod manducetur?42At illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi et favum mellis.43Et cum manducasset coram eis, sumens reliquias dedit eis.44Et dixit ad eos: Hæc sunt verba quæ locutus sum ad vos cum adhuc essem vobiscum, quoniam necesse est impleri omnia quæ scripta sunt in lege Moysi, et prophetis, et Psalmis de me.45Tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intelligerent Scripturas,46et dixit eis: Quoniam sic scriptum est, et sic oportebat Christum pati, et resurgere a mortuis tertia die:47et prædicari in nomine ejus pœnitentiam, et remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes, incipientibus ab Jerosolyma.48Vos autem testes estis horum.49Et ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos; vos autem sedete in civitate, quoadusque induamini virtute ex alto.
50Ἐξήγαγεν δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔξω ἕως πρὸς Βηθανίαν, καὶ ἐπάρας τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ εὐλόγησεν αὐτούς.51καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εὐλογεῖν αὐτὸν αὐτοὺς διέστη ἀπ' αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνεφέρετο εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν52καὶ αὐτοὶ προσκυνήσαντες αὐτὸν ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ μετὰ χαρᾶς μεγάλης,53καὶ ἦσαν διὰ παντὸς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ εὐλογοῦντες τὸν θεόν.50 When he had led them out as far as Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them;51 and even as he blessed them he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.52 So they bowed down to worship him, and went back full of joy to Jerusalem,53 where they spent their time continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.[7]50Eduxit autem eos foras in Bethaniam, et elevatis manibus suis benedixit eis.51Et factum est, dum benediceret illis, recessit ab eis, et ferebatur in cælum.52Et ipsi adorantes regressi sunt in Jerusalem cum gaudio magno:53et erant semper in templo, laudantes et benedicentes Deum. Amen.
