It is to have a rim of gold about it,4 and close under the rim two gold rings on either side, with poles in them, so that the altar can be carried;5 these poles, too, must be of acacia wood, gilded over.6 Its position is to be facing the veil that hides the ark and its records, facing, too, the throne that overshadows them, my trysting-place with thee.7 Aaron, when he trims the lamps each morning, shall burn fragrant incense on it,8 and again when he lights them at evening he shall burn incense in the Lord’s presence; a custom you are to preserve age after age.9 You are to offer no incense there but what is of my own prescription; there is to be no sacrifice, no victim, no pouring of libations.10 Once a year Aaron shall make intercession at the horns of it, with the blood that is offered in atonement for sin, winning pardon for you there, age after age; it shall be all holiness in the Lord’s honour. | 1Facies quoque altare ad adolendum thymiama, de lignis setim,2habens cubitum longitudinis, et alterum latitudinis, id est, quadrangulum, et duos cubitos in altitudine. | 11καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων12ἐὰν λάβῃς τὸν συλλογισμὸν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ ἐπισκοπῇ αὐτῶν καὶ δώσουσιν ἕκαστος λύτρα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἐν αὐτοῖς πτῶσις ἐν τῇ ἐπισκοπῇ αὐτῶν13καὶ τοῦτό ἐστιν ὃ δώσουσιν ὅσοι ἂν παραπορεύωνται τὴν ἐπίσκεψιν τὸ ἥμισυ τοῦ διδράχμου ὅ ἐστιν κατὰ τὸ δίδραχμον τὸ ἅγιον εἴκοσι ὀβολοὶ τὸ δίδραχμον τὸ δὲ ἥμισυ τοῦ διδράχμου εἰσφορὰ κυρίῳ14πᾶς ὁ παραπορευόμενος εἰς τὴν ἐπίσκεψιν ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω δώσουσιν τὴν εἰσφορὰν κυρίῳ15ὁ πλουτῶν οὐ προσθήσει καὶ ὁ πενόμενος οὐκ ἐλαττονήσει ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους τοῦ διδράχμου ἐν τῷ διδόναι τὴν εἰσφορὰν κυρίῳ ἐξιλάσασθαι περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν16καὶ λήμψῃ τὸ ἀργύριον τῆς εἰσφορᾶς παρὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ δώσεις αὐτὸ εἰς κάτεργον τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἔσται τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ μνημόσυνον ἔναντι κυρίου ἐξιλάσασθαι περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν | 11 This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses:12 When thou dost pass the Israelites in review and count their number, each shall pay the Lord a forfeit for his life, to avert all plague at the time of their numbering.[1]13 As each man is added to the count, he must pay half a sicle by sanctuary reckoning (note that the sicle, half of which must be paid to the Lord, is worth thirty pence).14 The forfeit must be paid by all those, above the age of twenty, who are registered,15 the rich giving no more than half a silver piece, and the poor no less.16 The money taken up in this contribution from the Israelites is to be devoted to the needs of the tabernacle which bears record of me, to put the Lord in mind of them, and win ransom for their lives. | 11Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:12Quando tuleris summam filiorum Israël juxta numerum, dabunt singuli pretium pro animabus suis Domino, et non erit plaga in eis, cum fuerint recensiti.13Hoc autem dabit omnis qui transit ad nomen, dimidium sicli juxta mensuram templi (siclus viginti obolos habet); media pars sicli offeretur Domino.14Qui habetur in numero, a viginti annis et supra, dabit pretium.15Dives non addet ad medium sicli, et pauper nihil minuet.16Susceptamque pecuniam, quæ collata est a filiis Israël, trades in usus tabernaculi testimonii, ut sit monimentum eorum coram Domino, et propitietur animabus eorum. |
| 17καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων18ποίησον λουτῆρα χαλκοῦν καὶ βάσιν αὐτῷ χαλκῆν ὥστε νίπτεσθαι καὶ θήσεις αὐτὸν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ἐκχεεῖς εἰς αὐτὸν ὕδωρ19καὶ νίψεται Ααρων καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐξ αὐτοῦ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας ὕδατι20ὅταν εἰσπορεύωνται εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου νίψονται ὕδατι καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνωσιν ἢ ὅταν προσπορεύωνται πρὸς τὸ θυσιαστήριον λειτουργεῖν καὶ ἀναφέρειν τὰ ὁλοκαυτώματα κυρίῳ21νίψονται τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τοὺς πόδας ὕδατι ὅταν εἰσπορεύωνται εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου νίψονται ὕδατι ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνωσιν καὶ ἔσται αὐτοῖς νόμιμον αἰώνιον αὐτῷ καὶ ταῖς γενεαῖς αὐτοῦ με{T'} αὐτόν | 17 This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses:18 Make a washing-basin of bronze, with a stand, and set it between the tabernacle that bears record of me and the brazen altar. Water shall be poured into it19 for Aaron and his sons to wash their hands and feet20 before they enter the tabernacle that bears record of me, or approach the altar to kindle their sacrifice before the Lord.21 This they must do on pain of death; it is an observance that must be kept alive by him and by all his sons that succeed him. | 17Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:18Facies et labrum æneum cum basi sua ad lavandum: ponesque illud inter tabernaculum testimonii et altare. | 22καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων23καὶ σὺ λαβὲ ἡδύσματα τὸ ἄνθος σμύρνης ἐκλεκτῆς πεντακοσίους σίκλους καὶ κινναμώμου εὐώδους τὸ ἥμισυ τούτου διακοσίους πεντήκοντα καὶ καλάμου εὐώδους διακοσίους πεντήκοντα24καὶ ἴρεως πεντακοσίους σίκλους τοῦ ἁγίου καὶ ἔλαιον ἐξ ἐλαίων ιν25καὶ ποιήσεις αὐτὸ ἔλαιον χρῖσμα ἅγιον μύρον μυρεψικὸν τέχνῃ μυρεψοῦ ἔλαιον χρῖσμα ἅγιον ἔσται26καὶ χρίσεις ἐξ αὐτοῦ τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ μαρτυρίου27καὶ τὴν λυχνίαν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῆς καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τοῦ θυμιάματος28καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων καὶ πάντα αὐτοῦ τὰ σκεύη καὶ τὴν τράπεζαν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν λουτῆρα καὶ τὴν βάσιν αὐτοῦ29καὶ ἁγιάσεις αὐτά καὶ ἔσται ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος αὐτῶν ἁγιασθήσεται30καὶ Ααρων καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ χρίσεις καὶ ἁγιάσεις αὐτοὺς ἱερατεύειν μοι | 22 This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses:23 Provide thyself with spices, a stone of the best and choicest[2] myrrh, and half a stone of cinnamon, and half a stone of scented cane,24 a stone, too, of cassia, all reckoned by sanctuary weights; and with these, three quarts of olive oil.25 And so make the holy oil to be used for anointing, an ointment mixed with all the perfumer’s art.26 This thou must use to anoint the tabernacle that bears record of me, and the ark where that record lies;27 the table with its appurtenances, the lamp-stand with its appurtenances, the altar used for incense,28 and that used for burnt-sacrifice, and all the instruments belonging to them.[3]29 All these thou shalt sanctify, and they shall be all holiness; whoever touches them shall become holy thereby.30 Aaron himself and his sons thou shalt anoint and hallow, before they can minister as my priests. | 22Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen,23dicens: Sume tibi aromata, primæ myrrhæ et electæ quingentos siclos, et cinnamomi medium, id est, ducentos quinquaginta siclos, calami similiter ducentos quinquaginta,24casiæ autem quingentos siclos, in pondere sanctuarii, olei de olivetis mensuram hin:25faciesque unctionis oleum sanctum, unguentum compositum opere unguentarii,26et unges ex eo tabernaculum testimonii, et arcam testamenti,27mensamque cum vasis suis, et candelabrum, et utensilia ejus, altaria thymiamatis,28et holocausti, et universam supellectilem quæ ad cultum eorum pertinet.29Sanctificabisque omnia, et erunt Sancta sanctorum; qui tetigerit ea, sanctificabitur.30Aaron et filios ejus unges, sanctificabisque eos, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi. |
| 31καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ λαλήσεις λέγων ἔλαιον ἄλειμμα χρίσεως ἅγιον ἔσται τοῦτο ὑμῖν εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν32ἐπὶ σάρκα ἀνθρώπου οὐ χρισθήσεται καὶ κατὰ τὴν σύνθεσιν ταύτην οὐ ποιήσετε ὑμῖν ἑαυτοῖς ὡσαύτως ἅγιόν ἐστιν καὶ ἁγίασμα ἔσται ὑμῖν33ὃς ἂν ποιήσῃ ὡσαύτως καὶ ὃς ἂν δῷ ἀ{P'} αὐτοῦ ἀλλογενεῖ ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ | 31 This, too, tell the Israelites: The oil used for anointing is a thing you must keep set apart for me, age after age.32 It is not to be used for anointing the flesh of man; nor are you to compound oil for yourselves as this is compounded; it is a thing set apart, and you must keep it holy.33 Whoever compounds such, though it be to give it to a stranger for his use, is lost to his people.[4] | 31Filiis quoque Israël dices: Hoc oleum unctionis sanctum erit mihi in generationes vestras.32Caro hominis non ungetur ex eo, et juxta compositionem ejus non facietis aliud, quia sanctificatum est, et sanctum erit vobis.33Homo quicumque tale composuerit, et dederit ex eo alieno, exterminabitur de populo suo. |
| 34καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λαβὲ σεαυτῷ ἡδύσματα στακτήν ὄνυχα χαλβάνην ἡδυσμοῦ καὶ λίβανον διαφανῆ ἴσον ἴσῳ ἔσται35καὶ ποιήσουσιν ἐν αὐτῷ θυμίαμα μυρεψικὸν ἔργον μυρεψοῦ μεμιγμένον καθαρόν ἔργον ἅγιον36καὶ συγκόψεις ἐκ τούτων λεπτὸν καὶ θήσεις ἀπέναντι τῶν μαρτυρίων ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου ὅθεν γνωσθήσομαί σοι ἐκεῖθεν ἅγιον τῶν ἁγίων ἔσται ὑμῖν37θυμίαμα κατὰ τὴν σύνθεσιν ταύτην οὐ ποιήσετε ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς ἁγίασμα ἔσται ὑμῖν κυρίῳ38ὃς ἂν ποιήσῃ ὡσαύτως ὥστε ὀσφραίνεσθαι ἐν αὐτῷ ἀπολεῖται ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ | 34 This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses: Provide thyself with spices, storax, and burnt shell, and sweet-smelling galbanum, and pure frankincense, all in equal weight,35 and make incense compounded with all the perfumer’s art, well tempered together, unadulterate, fit for hallowing.36 All this thou shalt beat into fine powder, and keep a store of it before the tabernacle that bears record of me, my trysting-place with thee. [2] The word used in the Hebrew text seems to mean ‘liquid’, although the reckoning is made by weight. The figures here only correspond roughly with those in the original, which are besides uncertain; some think that the weight was twice that here indicated.
[3] The Hebrew text adds at the end, ‘and the basin and its stand’.
[4] This appears to be the sense of the Latin; the Hebrew text is more naturally interpreted as meaning ‘The man who either makes oil like this, or gives awaythis oil to a stranger’. The stranger, in that case, would be anyone not of the priestly family, as in 29.33 above.
