It was now the fifteenth day of the second month since they had left Egypt,2 and the Israelites, one and all, there in the desert, were loud in their complaints against Moses and Aaron.3 It would have been better, they told them, if the Lord had struck us dead in the land of Egypt, where we sat down to bowls of meat, and had more bread than we needed to content us. Was it well done to bring us out into this desert, and starve our whole company to death?4 But the Lord said to Moses, I mean to rain down bread upon you from heaven. It will be for the people to go out and gather enough for their needs day by day; and so I shall have a test, whether they are ready to follow my orders or not.5 Only when the sixth day comes must they lay in a store twice as large as they gathered on any of the others.1Profectique sunt de Elim, et venit omnis multitudo filiorum Israël in desertum Sin, quod est inter Elim et Sinai, quintodecimo die mensis secundi, postquam egressi sunt de terra Ægypti.2Et murmuravit omnis congregatio filiorum Israël contra Moysen et Aaron in solitudine.3Dixeruntque filii Israël ad eos: Utinam mortui essemus per manum Domini in terra Ægypti, quando sedebamus super ollas carnium, et comedebamus panem in saturitate: cur eduxistis nos in desertum istud, ut occideretis omnem multitudinem fame?4Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: Ecce ego pluam vobis panes de cælo: egrediatur populus, et colligat quæ sufficiunt per singulos dies: ut tentem eum utrum ambulet in lege mea, an non.5Die autem sexto parent quod inferant: et sit duplum quam colligere solebant per singulos dies.
6καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ααρων πρὸς πᾶσαν συναγωγὴν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἑσπέρας γνώσεσθε ὅτι κύριος ἐξήγαγεν ὑμᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου7καὶ πρωὶ ὄψεσθε τὴν δόξαν κυρίου ἐν τῷ εἰσακοῦσαι τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἐσμεν ὅτι διαγογγύζετε κα{Q'} ἡμῶν8καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς ἐν τῷ διδόναι κύριον ὑμῖν ἑσπέρας κρέα φαγεῖν καὶ ἄρτους τὸ πρωὶ εἰς πλησμονὴν διὰ τὸ εἰσακοῦσαι κύριον τὸν γογγυσμὸν ὑμῶν ὃν ὑμεῖς διαγογγύζετε κα{Q'} ἡμῶν ἡμεῖς δὲ τί ἐσμεν οὐ γὰρ κα{Q'} ἡμῶν ὁ γογγυσμὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν ἀλ{L'} ἢ κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ9εἶπεν δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς Ααρων εἰπὸν πάσῃ συναγωγῇ υἱῶν Ισραηλ προσέλθατε ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσακήκοεν γὰρ ὑμῶν τὸν γογγυσμόν10ἡνίκα δὲ ἐλάλει Ααρων πάσῃ συναγωγῇ υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον καὶ ἡ δόξα κυρίου ὤφθη ἐν νεφέλῃ11καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων12εἰσακήκοα τὸν γογγυσμὸν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ λάλησον πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων τὸ πρὸς ἑσπέραν ἔδεσθε κρέα καὶ τὸ πρωὶ πλησθήσεσθε ἄρτων καὶ γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν6 So Moses and Aaron told all the people of Israel, This night shall bring proof it was the Lord that rescued you from Egypt,7 and to-morrow you shall witness his glory. He has heard your complaints against himself—not against us, we are nothing.8 The Lord (said Moses) means to give you meat for your food this evening, and bread tomorrow to your heart’s content. Not unheard, the complaints you have brought against him; we count for nothing, it is the Lord’s dealings you complain of, not ours.9 And Moses would have Aaron summon the whole people into the Lord’s presence, that had heard them talk so rebelliously.[1]10 Even as Aaron was speaking to the assembled Israelites, they looked round towards the desert, and saw the glory of the Lord revealed there in a cloud.11 And the Lord said to Moses,12 This be thy answer to the rebel talk I hear: This evening you shall have meat, and bread to-morrow to your hearts’ content; will you doubt, then, that I am the Lord your God?6Dixeruntque Moyses et Aaron ad omnes filios Israël: Vespere scietis quod Dominus eduxerit vos de terra Ægypti,7et mane videbitis gloriam Domini: audivit enim murmur vestrum contra Dominum: nos vero quid sumus, quia mussitastis contra nos?8Et ait Moyses: Dabit vobis Dominus vespere carnes edere, et mane panes in saturitate: eo quod audierit murmurationes vestras quibus murmurati estis contra eum: nos enim quid sumus? nec contra nos est murmur vestrum, sed contra Dominum.9Dixit quoque Moyses ad Aaron: Dic universæ congregationi filiorum Israël: Accedite coram Domino: audivit enim murmur vestrum.10Cumque loqueretur Aaron ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël, respexerunt ad solitudinem: et ecce gloria Domini apparuit in nube.11Locutus est autem Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:12Audivi murmurationes filiorum Israël. Loquere ad eos: Vespere comedetis carnes, et mane saturabimini panibus: scietisque quod ego sum Dominus Deus vester.

And at morning, all about the camp, dew was lying;14 dew that covered the earth’s surface, there in the desert, powdered fine as if it had been brayed by a pestle, lying on the ground like hoar-frost.[2]15 The Israelites could not tell what it was when they went to look at it; Man-hu, they said to one another, What is it? And Moses told them, This is the bread which the Lord has sent for your eating.16 And this is the command the Lord gives you; everyone is to gather enough for his needs; a gomor a head is the measure he is to take up, just so much for each person living in his tent.17 So the children of Israel did as they were bidden, gathering up one more, another less,18 and each of them measuring it by the measure of a gomor. The man who gathered more did not gather too much for his household, or the man who gathered less too little; each gathered according to the number of mouths that must be filled.19 None of you, Moses told them, must keep any of it for the morrow.20 Little heed they gave him, but when some of them left part of it over till morning, it bred worms and corrupted, and Moses rebuked them for their disobedience.21 So, every morning, each man gathered what would suffice for his needs; whatever was left till the sun grew hot, melted away.13Factum est ergo vespere, et ascendens coturnix, cooperuit castra: mane quoque ros jacuit per circuitum castrorum.14Cumque operuisset superficiem terræ, apparuit in solitudine minutum, et quasi pilo tusum in similitudinem pruinæ super terram.15Quod cum vidissent filii Israël, dixerunt ad invicem: Manhu? quod significat: Quid est hoc? ignorabant enim quid esset.

And when this was reported to Moses by those who were in command of the people,23 he told them, Why, that is the direction the Lord has given us. To-morrow is the sabbath, a day of rest consecrated to the Lord; prepare all you need to prepare, cook all you need to cook, for to-day, and leave what is over for to-morrow.24 And when they did as Moses had bidden them, they found that what they had left overnight did not corrupt or breed worms at all.25 That is your food for to-day, Moses told them, because it is the Lord’s sabbath; go out to-day, and you will find nothing.26 You have only six days to gather it in; you will find none on the seventh, the Lord’s day of rest forbids it.27 And sure enough, when some of the people went out to gather it on the seventh day, they could find none.28 Hereupon the Lord said to Moses, Will you never learn to do as my law commands you?29 Can you not see that the sabbath is the Lord’s gift to you, and if he gives you a double allowance on the sixth day, it is because you must all stay within doors, not leaving your homes, on the seventh?30 So on the seventh day the people kept the sabbath rest.22In die autem sexta collegerunt cibos duplices, id est, duo gomor per singulos homines: venerunt autem omnes principes multitudinis, et narraverunt Moysi.23Qui ait eis: Hoc est quod locutus est Dominus: Requies sabbati sanctificata est Domino cras: quodcumque operandum est, facite, et quæ coquenda sunt coquite: quidquid autem reliquum fuerit, reponite usque in mane.24Feceruntque ita ut præceperat Moyses, et non computruit, neque vermis inventus est in eo.25Dixitque Moyses: Comedite illud hodie, quia sabbatum est Domini: non invenietur hodie in agro.26Sex diebus colligite: in die autem septimo sabbatum est Domini, idcirco non invenietur.27Venitque septima dies: et egressi de populo ut colligerent, non invenerunt.28Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: Usquequo non vultis custodire mandata mea et legem meam?29videte quod Dominus dederit vobis sabbatum, et propter hoc die sexta tribuit vobis cibos duplices: maneat unusquisque apud semetipsum; nullus egrediatur de loco suo die septimo.30Et sabbatizavit populus die septimo.
