| 1Ἦν δὲ τὸ πάσχα καὶ τὰ ἄζυμα μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας, καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς πῶς αὐτὸν ἐν δόλῳ κρατήσαντες ἀποκτείνωσιν:2ἔλεγον γάρ: μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ, μήποτε ἔσται θόρυβος τοῦ λαοῦ.3Καὶ ὄντος αὐτοῦ ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ, κατακειμένου αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτελοῦς: συντρίψασα τὴν ἀλάβαστρον κατέχεεν αὐτοῦ τῆς κεφαλῆς.4ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς: εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν;5ἠδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο τὸ μύρον πραθῆναι ἐπάνω δηναρίων τριακοσίων καὶ δοθῆναι τοῖς πτωχοῖς: καὶ ἐνεβριμῶντο αὐτῇ.6ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: ἄφετε αὐτήν: τί αὐτῇ κόπους παρέχετε; καλὸν ἔργον ἠργάσατο ἐν ἐμοί.7πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ' ἑαυτῶν, καὶ ὅταν θέλητε δύνασθε αὐτοῖς εὖ ποιῆσαι, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε.8ὃ ἔσχεν ἐποίησεν: προέλαβεν μυρίσαι τὸ σῶμά μου εἰς τὸν ἐνταφιασμόν.9ἀμὴν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον εἰς ὅλον τὸν κόσμον, καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη λαληθήσεται εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.10Καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριὼθ, ὁ εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα αὐτὸν παραδοῖ αὐτοῖς.11οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ἐχάρησαν καὶ ἐπηγγείλαντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι: καὶ ἐζήτει πῶς αὐτὸν εὐκαίρως παραδοῖ. | 1 It was now two days to the paschal feast and the time of unleavened bread; and the chief priests and scribes were trying to bring Jesus into their power by cunning, and put him to death;2 But not on the day of the feast, they said, or there may be an uproar among the people.3 And then, while he was in the house of Simon the leper, at Bethany, sitting at table, a woman came in with a pot of very precious spikenard ointment, which, first breaking the pot, she poured over his head.4 There were some present who were indignant when they saw it, and said among themselves, What did she mean by wasting the ointment so?5 This ointment might have been sold for three hundred pieces of silver, and alms might have been given to the poor. And they rebuked her angrily.6 But Jesus said, Let her alone; why should you vex her? She did well to treat me so.7 You have the poor among you always, so that you can do good to them when you will; I am not always among you.8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand to prepare it for burial.9 I promise you, in whatever part of the world this gospel is preached, the story of what she has done shall be told in its place, to preserve her memory.10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests and offered to betray him into their hands.11 And they, listening to him eagerly, promised him money; whereupon he looked about for an opportunity to betray him.[1] | 1Erat autem Pascha et azyma post biduum: et quærebant summi sacerdotes et scribæ quomodo eum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.2Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.3Et cum esset Bethaniæ in domo Simonis leprosi, et recumberet, venit mulier habens alabastrum unguenti nardi spicati pretiosi: et fracto alabastro, effudit super caput ejus.4Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos, et dicentes: Ut quid perditio ista unguenti facta est?5poterat enim unguentum istud venundari plus quam trecentis denariis, et dari pauperibus. Bonum opus operata est in me:7semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum: et cum volueritis, potestis illis benefacere: me autem non semper habetis.8Quod habuit hæc, fecit: prævenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.9Amen dico vobis: Ubicumque prædicatum fuerit Evangelium istud in universo mundo, et quod fecit hæc, narrabitur in memoriam ejus.10Et Judas Iscariotes, unus de duodecim, abiit ad summos sacerdotes, ut proderet eum illis.11Qui audientes gavisi sunt: et promiserunt ei pecuniam se daturos. | 12Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων, ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἔθυον, λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ: ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχα;13καὶ ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ἀπαντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων: ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ,14καὶ ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ εἴπατε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅτι ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει: ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμά μου, ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω;15καὶ αὐτὸς ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνάγαιον μέγα ἐστρωμένον ἕτοιμον, καὶ ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν.16καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα.17Καὶ ὀψίας γενομένης ἔρχεται μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα.18καὶ ἀνακειμένων αὐτῶν καὶ ἐσθιόντων ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με, ὁ ἐσθίων μετ' ἐμοῦ.19ἤρξαντο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς κατὰ εἷς: μήτι ἐγώ;20ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, ὁ ἐμβαπτόμενος μετ' ἐμοῦ εἰς τὸ τρύβλιον.21ὅτι ὁ μὲν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει, καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ: οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι' οὗ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται: καλὸν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος. | 12 On the first of the days of unleavened bread, when they killed the paschal victim, his disciples asked him, Where wilt thou have us go and make ready for thee to eat the paschal meal?13 And he sent two of his disciples on this errand, Go into the city, and there a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water; you are to follow him,14 and say to the owner of the house into which he enters, The master says, Where is my room, in which I am to eat the paschal meal with my disciples?15 And he will shew you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; it is there that you are to make ready for us.16 So the disciples left him and went into the city, where they found all as he had told them, and so made ready for the paschal meal.17 When it was evening, he came there with the twelve.18 And as they sat at table and were eating, Jesus said, Believe me, one of you, one who is eating with me, is to betray me.19 They began to ask him sorrowfully, each in turn, Is it I? and then another, Is it I?20 He told them, It is one of the twelve, the man who puts his hand into the dish with me.21 The Son of Man goes on his way, as the scripture foretells of him; but woe upon that man by whom the Son of Man is to be betrayed; better for that man if he had never been born.[2] | 12Et primo die azymorum quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli: Quo vis eamus, et paremus tibi ut manduces Pascha?13Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis, et dicit eis: Ite in civitatem, et occurret vobis homo lagenam aquæ bajulans: sequimini eum,14et quocumque introierit, dicite domino domus, quia magister dicit: Ubi est refectio mea, ubi Pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?15Et ipse vobis demonstrabit cœnaculum grande, stratum: et illic parate nobis.16Et abierunt discipuli ejus, et venerunt in civitatem: et invenerunt sicut dixerat illis, et paraverunt Pascha.17Vespere autem facto, venit cum duodecim.18Et discumbentibus eis, et manducantibus, ait Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia unus ex vobis tradet me, qui manducat mecum.19At illi cœperunt contristari, et dicere ei singulatim: Numquid ego?20Qui ait illis: Unus ex duodecim, qui intingit mecum manum in catino.21Et Filius quidem hominis vadit sicut scriptum est de eo: væ autem homini illi per quem Filius hominis tradetur! bonum erat ei, si non esset natus homo ille. |
| 22Καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ εἶπεν: λάβετε: τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου.23καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἔπιον ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες.24καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον ὑπὲρ πολλῶν.25ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐκέτι οὐ μὴ πίω ἐκ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ.26Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν.27καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι πάντες σκανδαλισθήσεσθε, ὅτι γέγραπται: πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα, καὶ τὰ πρόβατα διασκορπισθήσονται.28ἀλλὰ μετὰ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.29ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη αὐτῷ: εἰ καὶ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται, ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐγώ.30καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι σὺ σήμερον ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἢ δὶς ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ.31ὁ δὲ ἐκπερισσῶς ἐλάλει: ἐὰν δέῃ με συναποθανεῖν σοι, οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ πάντες ἔλεγον. | 22 And while they were still at table, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, Take this; this is my body.23 Then he took a cup, and offered thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said,24 This is my blood of the new testament, shed for many.25 I tell you truthfully, I shall not drink of this fruit of the vine again, until the day when I drink it with you, new wine, in the kingdom of God.[3]26 And so they sang a hymn, and went out to mount Olivet.27 And Jesus said to them, Tonight you will all lose courage over me; for so it has been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.[4]28 But I will go on before you into Galilee, when I have risen from the dead.29 Peter said to him, Though all else should lose courage over thee, I will never lose mine.30 And Jesus said to him, Believe me, this night, before the second cock-crow, thou wilt thrice disown me.31 But Peter insisted more than ever, I will not disown thee, though I must lay down my life with thee. And all of them said the like.[5] | 22Et manducantibus illis, accepit Jesus panem: et benedicens fregit, et dedit eis, et ait: Sumite, hoc est corpus meum.23Et accepto calice, gratias agens dedit eis: et biberunt ex illo omnes.24Et ait illis: Hic est sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur.25Amen dico vobis, quia jam non bibam de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei.26Et hymno dicto exierunt in montem Olivarum.27Et ait eis Jesus: Omnes scandalizabimini in me in nocte ista: quia scriptum est: Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves.28Sed postquam resurrexero, præcedam vos in Galilæam.29Petrus autem ait illi: Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, sed non ego.30Et ait illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi, quia tu hodie in nocte hac, priusquam gallus vocem bis dederit, ter me es negaturus.31At ille amplius loquebatur: Et si oportuerit me simul commori tibi, non te negabo. | 32Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς χωρίον οὗ τὸ ὄνομα Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ: καθίσατε ὧδε ἕως προσεύξωμαι.33καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τὸν Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννην μετ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν,34καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου: μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε.35καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπιπτεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ προσηύχετο ἵνα εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρέλθῃ ἀπ' αὐτοῦ ἡ ὥρα,36καὶ ἔλεγεν: Αββα ὁ πατήρ, πάντα δυνατά σοι: παρένεγκε τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο ἀπ' ἐμοῦ: ἀλλ' οὐ τί ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλὰ τί σύ.37καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ: Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἴσχυσας μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι;38γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ ἔλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν. τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον, ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.39καὶ πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπών.40καὶ πάλιν ἐλθὼν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας: ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ καταβαρυνόμενοι, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν τί ἀποκριθῶσιν αὐτῷ.41καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: καθεύδετε τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε: ἀπέχει: ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα, ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν.42ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν: ἰδοὺ ὁ παραδιδούς με ἤγγικεν. | 32 So they came to a plot of land called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples, Sit down here, while I go and pray.33 But he took Peter and James and John with him. And now he grew dismayed and distressed:34 My soul, he said to them, is ready to die with sorrow; do you abide here, and keep watch.35 So he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass him by:36 Abba, Father, he said, all things are possible to thee; take away this chalice from before me; only as thy will is, not as mine is.37 Then he went back, and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, Simon, art thou sleeping? Hadst thou not strength to watch even for an hour?38 Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing enough, but the flesh is weak.39 Then he went away and prayed again, using the same words.40 And when he returned, once more he found them asleep, so heavy their eyelids were; and they did not know what answer to make to him.41 When he came the third time, he said to them, Sleep and take your rest hereafter.[6] Enough; the time has come; behold, the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.42 Rise up, let us go on our way; already, he that is to betray me is close at hand. | 32Et veniunt in prædium, cui nomen Gethsemani. Et ait Petro: Simon, dormis? non potuisti una hora vigilare?38vigilate et orate, ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro vero infirma.39Et iterum abiens oravit, eumdem sermonem dicens.40Et reversus, denuo invenit eos dormientes (erant enim oculi eorum gravati), et ignorabant quid responderent ei.41Et venit tertio, et ait illis: Dormite jam, et requiescite. Sufficit: venit hora: ecce Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.42Surgite, eamus: ecce qui me tradet, prope est. |
| 43Καὶ εὐθὺς ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος παραγίνεται Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, καὶ μετ' αὐτοῦ ὄχλος μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων.44δεδώκει δὲ ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν σύσσημον αὐτοῖς λέγων: ὃν ἂν φιλήσω, αὐτός ἐστιν: κρατήσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπάγετε ἀσφαλῶς.45καὶ ἐλθὼν εὐθὺς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ λέγει: ῥαββί, καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν:46οἱ δὲ ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν.47εἷς δέ τις τῶν παρεστηκότων σπασάμενος τὴν μάχαιραν ἔπαισεν τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον.48καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με:49καθ' ἡμέραν ἤμην πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων, καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με: ἀλλ' ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαί.50καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον πάντες.51Καὶ νεανίσκος τις συνηκολούθει αὐτῷ περιβεβλημένος σινδόνα ἐπὶ γυμνοῦ, καὶ κρατοῦσιν αὐτόν:52ὁ δὲ καταλιπὼν τὴν σινδόνα γυμνὸς ἔφυγεν.53Καὶ ἀπήγαγον τὸν Ἰησοῦν πρὸς τὸν ἀρχιερέα, καὶ συνέρχονται πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς. | 43 And thereupon, while he was yet speaking, Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, came near; with him was a great multitude carrying swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.44 The traitor had appointed them a signal; It is none other, he said, than the man whom I shall greet with a kiss; hold him fast, and take him away under guard.45 No sooner, then, had he come up than he went close to Jesus, saying, Hail, Master, and kissed him;46 and with that they laid their hands on him, and held him fast.47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword, and smote one of the high priest’s servants with it, cutting off his ear.48 Then Jesus said to them aloud, You have come out to my arrest with swords and clubs, as if I were a robber;49 and yet I used to teach in the temple close to you, day after day, and you never laid hands on me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled.50 And now all his disciples abandoned him, and fled.[7]51 There was a young man there following him, who was wearing only a linen shirt on his bare body; and he, when they laid hold of him,52 left the shirt in their hands, and ran away from them naked.53 So they took Jesus into the presence of the high priest, and all the chief priests and elders and scribes were assembled about him. | 43Et, adhuc eo loquente, venit Judas Iscariotes unus de duodecim, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis et lignis, a summis sacerdotibus, et scribis, et senioribus.44Dederat autem traditor ejus signum eis, dicens: Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum, et ducite caute.45Et cum venisset, statim accedens ad eum, ait: Ave Rabbi: et osculatus est eum.46At illi manus injecerunt in eum, et tenuerunt eum.47Unus autem quidam de circumstantibus educens gladium, percussit servum summi sacerdotis, et amputavit illi auriculam.48Et respondens Jesus, ait illis: Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et lignis comprehendere me?49quotidie eram apud vos in templo docens, et non me tenuistis. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of God’s power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.63 At this, the high priest tore his garments, and said, What further need have we of witnesses?64 You have heard his blasphemy for yourselves; what is your finding? Then he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.69 Again the maid looked at him, and said to the bystanders, This is one of them.[9]70 And again he denied it. Then, a little while afterwards, the bystanders said to Peter, It is certain that thou art one of them; why, thou art a Galilean.71 And he fell to calling down curses on himself and swearing, I do not know the man you speak of.72 Then came the second cock-crow; and Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him, Before the second cock-crow thou wilt thrice deny me.
