| 1καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Τωβιτ Τωβιαν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅρα τέκνον μισθὸν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τῷ συνελθόντι σοι καὶ προσθεῖναι αὐτῷ δεῖ2καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πάτερ οὐ βλάπτομαι δοὺς αὐτῷ τὸ ἥμισυ ὧν ἐνήνοχα3ὅτι με ἀγείοχέν σοι ὑγιῆ καὶ τὴν γυναῖκά μου ἐθεράπευσεν καὶ τὸ ἀργύριόν μου ἤνεγκεν καὶ σὲ ὁμοίως ἐθεράπευσεν4καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πρεσβύτης δικαιοῦται αὐτῷ | 1 And now Tobias took his son aside and asked him, What payment shall we make to this heaven-sent companion of thine?2 Payment? answered he; why, what reward can ever suffice for all the services he did me?3 He it was that escorted me safely, going and coming; recovered the debt from Gabelus; won me my bride; rid her of the fiend’s attack; engaged the gratitude of her parents; rescued me from the fish’s onslaught; and to thee restored the light of day. Through him, we have been loaded with benefits; is it possible to make any return for all these?4 Do this, father, at least; ask him to accept half of all the wealth that has come to us. | 1Tunc vocavit ad se Tobias filium suum, dixitque ei: Quid possumus dare viro isti sancto, qui venit tecum?2Respondens Tobias, dixit patri suo: Pater, quam mercedem dabimus ei? aut quid dignum poterit esse beneficiis ejus?3Me duxit et reduxit sanum, pecuniam a Gabelo ipse recepit, uxorem ipse me habere fecit, et dæmonium ab ea ipse compescuit: gaudium parentibus ejus fecit, meipsum a devoratione piscis eripuit, te quoque videre fecit lumen cæli, et bonis omnibus per eum repleti sumus. | 5καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸν ἄγγελον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ λαβὲ τὸ ἥμισυ πάντων ὧν ἐνηνόχατε6τότε καλέσας τοὺς δύο κρυπτῶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς εὐλογεῖτε τὸν θεὸν καὶ αὐτῷ ἐξομολογεῖσθε μεγαλωσύνην δίδοτε αὐτῷ καὶ ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἐνώπιον πάντων τῶν ζώντων περὶ ὧν ἐποίησεν με{Q'} ὑμῶν ἀγαθὸν τὸ εὐλογεῖν τὸν θεὸν καὶ ὑψοῦν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ τοὺς λόγους τῶν ἔργων τοῦ θεοῦ ἐντίμως ὑποδεικνύοντες καὶ μὴ ὀκνεῖτε ἐξομολογεῖσθαι αὐτῷ7μυστήριον βασιλέως καλὸν κρύψαι τὰ δὲ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνακαλύπτειν ἐνδόξως ἀγαθὸν ποιήσατε καὶ κακὸν οὐχ εὑρήσει ὑμᾶς | 5 So both of them, father and son, beckoned him aside, and would have prevailed on him to accept half of their new-found wealth.6 But he, with a finger on his lip,[1] bade them give their thanks to the God of heaven. To him, he said, offer your praises for all men to hear; he it is that has shewn mercy to you.7 Kings have their counsel that must be kept secret; God’s ways are open, and he honours them best who proclaims them openly. | 5Et vocantes eum, pater scilicet et filius, tulerunt eum in partem: et rogare cœperunt ut dignaretur dimidiam partem omnium quæ attulerant acceptam habere.6Tunc dixit eis occulte: Benedicite Deum cæli, et coram omnibus viventibus confitemini ei, quia fecit vobiscum misericordiam suam.7Etenim sacramentum regis abscondere bonum est: opera autem Dei revelare et confiteri honorificum est. |
| 8ἀγαθὸν προσευχὴ μετὰ νηστείας καὶ ἐλεημοσύνης καὶ δικαιοσύνης ἀγαθὸν τὸ ὀλίγον μετὰ δικαιοσύνης ἢ πολὺ μετὰ ἀδικίας καλὸν ποιῆσαι ἐλεημοσύνην ἢ θησαυρίσαι χρυσίον9ἐλεημοσύνη γὰρ ἐκ θανάτου ῥύεται καὶ αὐτὴ ἀποκαθαριεῖ πᾶσαν ἁμαρτίαν οἱ ποιοῦντες ἐλεημοσύνας καὶ δικαιοσύνας πλησθήσονται ζωῆς10οἱ δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες πολέμιοί εἰσιν τῆς ἑαυτῶν ζωῆς11οὐ μὴ κρύψω ἀ{F'} ὑμῶν πᾶν ῥῆμα εἴρηκα δή μυστήριον βασιλέως κρύψαι καλόν τὰ δὲ ἔργα τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνακαλύπτειν ἐνδόξως12καὶ νῦν ὅτε προσηύξω σὺ καὶ ἡ νύμφη σου Σαρρα ἐγὼ προσήγαγον τὸ μνημόσυνον τῆς προσευχῆς ὑμῶν ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἁγίου καὶ ὅτε ἔθαπτες τοὺς νεκρούς ὡσαύτως συμπαρήμην σοι13καὶ ὅτε οὐκ ὤκνησας ἀναστῆναι καὶ καταλιπεῖν τὸ ἄριστόν σου ὅπως ἀπελθὼν περιστείλῃς τὸν νεκρόν οὐκ ἔλαθές με ἀγαθοποιῶν ἀλλὰ σὺν σοὶ ἤμην14καὶ νῦν ἀπέστειλέν με ὁ θεὸς ἰάσασθαί σε καὶ τὴν νύμφην σου Σαρραν15ἐγώ εἰμι Ραφαηλ εἷς ἐκ τῶν ἑπτὰ ἁγίων ἀγγέλων οἳ προσαναφέρουσιν τὰς προσευχὰς τῶν ἁγίων καὶ εἰσπορεύονται ἐνώπιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ ἁγίου | 8 Prayer, fasting, and alms, said he, here is better treasure to lay up than any store of gold.9 Almsgiving is death’s avoiding, is guilt’s atoning, is the winning of mercy and of life eternal;10 the sinners, the wrong-doers, are enemies to their own souls.11 Come, let me tell you the whole truth of the matter, bring the hidden purpose of it to light.12 When thou, Tobias, wert praying, and with tears, when thou wert burying the dead, leaving thy dinner untasted, so as to hide them all day in thy house, and at night give them funeral, I, all the while, was offering that prayer of thine to the Lord.13 Then, because thou hadst won his favour, needs must that trials should come, and test thy worth.14 And now, for thy healing, for the deliverance of thy son’s wife Sara from the fiend’s attack, he has chosen me for his messenger.15 Who am I? I am the angel Raphael, and my place is among those seven who stand in the presence of the Lord. | 8Bona est oratio cum jejunio, et eleemosyna magis quam thesauros auri recondere:9quoniam eleemosyna a morte liberat, et ipsa est quæ purgat peccata, et facit invenire misericordiam et viam æternam.10Qui autem faciunt peccatum et iniquitatem, hostes sunt animæ suæ.11Manifesto ergo vobis veritatem, et non abscondam a vobis occultum sermonem.12Quando orabas cum lacrimis, et sepeliebas mortuos, et derelinquebas prandium tuum, et mortuos abscondebas per diem in domo tua, et nocte sepeliebas eos, ego obtuli orationem tuam Domino.13Et quia acceptus eras Deo, necesse fuit ut tentatio probaret te.14Et nunc misit me Dominus ut curarem te, et Saram uxorem filii tui a dæmonio liberarem.15Ego enim sum Raphaël angelus, unus ex septem qui adstamus ante Dominum. |
| 16καὶ ἐταράχθησαν οἱ δύο καὶ ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν17καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς μὴ φοβεῖσθε εἰρήνη ὑμῖν ἔσται τὸν δὲ θεὸν εὐλογεῖτε εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα18ὅτι οὐ τῇ ἐμαυτοῦ χάριτι ἀλλὰ τῇ θελήσει τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἦλθον ὅθεν εὐλογεῖτε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα19πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ὠπτανόμην ὑμῖν καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγον οὐδὲ ἔπιον ἀλλὰ ὅρασιν ὑμεῖς ἐθεωρεῖτε20καὶ νῦν ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ θεῷ διότι ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με καὶ γράψατε πάντα τὰ συντελεσθέντα εἰς βιβλίον21καὶ ἀνέστησαν καὶ οὐκέτι εἶδον αὐτόν22καὶ ἐξωμολογοῦντο τὰ ἔργα τὰ μεγάλα καὶ θαυμαστὰ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὡς ὤφθη αὐτοῖς ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου | 16 Upon hearing this, they were both mazed with terror, and fell down trembling, face to earth.17 Peace be with you, the angel said; do not be afraid.18 It was God’s will, not mine, brought me to your side; to him pay the thanks and praise you owe.19 I was at your side, eating and drinking, but only in outward show; the food, the drink I live by, man’s eyes cannot see.20 And now the time has come when I must go back to him who sent me; give thanks to God, and tell the story of his great deeds.21 With that, he was caught away from their eyes, and no more might they see of him.[2]22 For three hours together, face to earth, they gave thanks to God; and when they rose up, it was to tell the story of all these marvels. | 16Cumque hæc audissent, turbati sunt, et trementes ceciderunt super terram in faciem suam.17Dixitque eis angelus: Pax vobis: nolite timere.18Etenim cum essem vobiscum, per voluntatem Dei eram: ipsum benedicite, et cantate illi.19Videbar quidem vobiscum manducare et bibere: sed ego cibo invisibili, et potu qui ab hominibus videri non potest, utor.20Tempus est ergo ut revertar ad eum qui me misit: vos autem benedicite Deum, et narrate omnia mirabilia ejus.21Et cum hæc dixisset, ab aspectu eorum ablatus est, et ultra eum videre non potuerunt.22Tunc prostrati per horas tres in faciem, benedixerunt Deum: et exsurgentes narraverunt omnia mirabilia ejus. |
[1] Literally, ‘in secret’, but as the three had already gone apart, it seems best to understand the words as referring to somegesture of secrecy.
[2] In the Aramaic text we now have, Raphael goes away without disclosing his identity.
