| 1εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Ιακωβ ἀναστὰς ἀνάβηθι εἰς τὸν τόπον Βαιθηλ καὶ οἴκει ἐκεῖ καὶ ποίησον ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον τῷ θεῷ τῷ ὀφθέντι σοι ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδράσκειν σε ἀπὸ προσώπου Ησαυ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου2εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἄρατε τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους τοὺς με{Q'} ὑμῶν ἐκ μέσου ὑμῶν καὶ καθαρίσασθε καὶ ἀλλάξατε τὰς στολὰς ὑμῶν3καὶ ἀναστάντες ἀναβῶμεν εἰς Βαιθηλ καὶ ποιήσωμεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐπακούσαντί μοι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως ὃς ἦν με{T'} ἐμοῦ καὶ διέσωσέν με ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ᾗ ἐπορεύθην4καὶ ἔδωκαν τῷ Ιακωβ τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους οἳ ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ἐνώτια τὰ ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ κατέκρυψεν αὐτὰ Ιακωβ ὑπὸ τὴν τερέμινθον τὴν ἐν Σικιμοις καὶ ἀπώλεσεν αὐτὰ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας5καὶ ἐξῆρεν Ισραηλ ἐκ Σικιμων καὶ ἐγένετο φόβος θεοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς κύκλῳ αὐτῶν καὶ οὐ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ | 1 In the meanwhile, too, God had said to Jacob, Bestir thyself, go up to Bethel, and make thy dwelling there; there build an altar to the God who revealed himself to thee when thou wast in flight from thy brother Esau.2 Whereupon Jacob summoned all his household; Cast away, he told them, whatever images of alien gods you have among you, purify yourselves, and put on fresh garments.3 We must leave this, and go up to Bethel; there we must build an altar to the God who listened to me in time of trouble, and escorted me on my journey.4 So they gave him all the images of alien gods that were in their possession, the rings, too, which they wore on their ears, and he buried them under the mastic-tree, close to the town of Sichem.5 Thus they set out on their journey, and God inspired terror into the hearts of all who dwelt around them, so that they durst not pursue them as they went. | 1Interea locutus est Deus ad Jacob: Surge, et ascende Bethel, et habita ibi, facque altare Deo qui apparuit tibi quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum.2Jacob vero convocata omni domo sua, ait: Abjicite deos alienos qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini, ac mutate vestimenta vestra.3Surgite, et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo: qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meæ, et socius fuit itineris mei.4Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos quos habebant, et inaures quæ erant in auribus eorum: at ille infodit ea subter terebinthum, quæ est post urbem Sichem.5Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi recedentes. |
| 6ἦλθεν δὲ Ιακωβ εἰς Λουζα ἥ ἐστιν ἐν γῇ Χανααν ἥ ἐστιν Βαιθηλ αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαός ὃς ἦν με{T'} αὐτοῦ7καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου Βαιθηλ ἐκεῖ γὰρ ἐπεφάνη αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδράσκειν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ προσώπου Ησαυ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ8ἀπέθανεν δὲ Δεββωρα ἡ τροφὸς Ρεβεκκας κατώτερον Βαιθηλ ὑπὸ τὴν βάλανον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Βάλανος πένθους9ὤφθη δὲ ὁ θεὸς Ιακωβ ἔτι ἐν Λουζα ὅτε παρεγένετο ἐκ Μεσοποταμίας τῆς Συρίας καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός10καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεός τὸ ὄνομά σου Ιακωβ οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι Ιακωβ ἀλ{L'} Ισραηλ ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου11εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ θεός ἐγὼ ὁ θεός σου αὐξάνου καὶ πληθύνου ἔθνη καὶ συναγωγαὶ ἐθνῶν ἔσονται ἐκ σοῦ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐκ τῆς ὀσφύος σου ἐξελεύσονται12καὶ τὴν γῆν ἣν δέδωκα Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ σοὶ δέδωκα αὐτήν σοὶ ἔσται καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου μετὰ σὲ δώσω τὴν γῆν ταύτην13ἀνέβη δὲ ὁ θεὸς ἀ{P'} αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου οὗ ἐλάλησεν με{T'} αὐτοῦ14καὶ ἔστησεν Ιακωβ στήλην ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ᾧ ἐλάλησεν με{T'} αὐτοῦ στήλην λιθίνην καὶ ἔσπεισεν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν σπονδὴν καὶ ἐπέχεεν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν ἔλαιον15καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐν ᾧ ἐλάλησεν με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖ ὁ θεός Βαιθηλ16ἀπάρας δὲ Ιακωβ ἐκ Βαιθηλ ἔπηξεν τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπέκεινα τοῦ πύργου Γαδερ ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤγγισεν Χαβραθα εἰς γῆν ἐλθεῖν Εφραθα ἔτεκεν Ραχηλ καὶ ἐδυστόκησεν ἐν τῷ τοκετῷ17ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ σκληρῶς αὐτὴν τίκτειν εἶπεν αὐτῇ ἡ μαῖα θάρσει καὶ γὰρ οὗτός σοί ἐστιν υἱός18ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἀφιέναι αὐτὴν τὴν ψυχήν ἀπέθνῃσκεν γάρ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Υἱὸς ὀδύνης μου ὁ δὲ πατὴρ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν Βενιαμιν19ἀπέθανεν δὲ Ραχηλ καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ Εφραθα αὕτη ἐστὶν Βηθλεεμ20καὶ ἔστησεν Ιακωβ στήλην ἐπὶ τοῦ μνημείου αὐτῆς αὕτη ἐστὶν στήλη μνημείου Ραχηλ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας21 | 6 Jacob, then, with all his clan, made their way to Luza, which is now called Bethel,7 and built an altar there. It was he who called the place Bethel, the house of God, because it was there God appeared to him when he was in flight from his brother.8 It was at this time that Debora, Rebecca’s nurse, died; she was buried under an oak, by the spur of the hills where Bethel is, and the place came to be called, The Oak of Mourning.9 Once again God revealed himself to Jacob, after his return from Mesopotamia of the Syrians, blessing him,10 and assuring him, Thou shalt not be called Jacob any longer; Israel is to be thy name.11 So, calling to him by this name of Israel, he said to him, I am God all-powerful, and I bid thee increase and multiply; peoples shall descend from thee, whole families of nations, and kings shall be born of thy stock;12 and that land, which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee and to thy posterity after thee.13 Then God went away out of his sight;14 and he built a monument of stone at the place where God had spoken to him, offering libations there and pouring oil upon it.15 Bethel was the name he gave to the place,16 and when he left it, in the spring, he journeyed into the country that lies towards Ephrata.[1] Here Rachel was in travail,17 and the difficult labour she had was endangering her life; but the midwife said to her, Do not be afraid; this time, too, thou wilt give birth to a son.18 But her life was ebbing away in her pangs; she saw that she was close to death, and called her son Benoni, the child of my distress. His father’s name for him was Benjamin, the child of his right hand.19 So Rachel died, and was buried on the way that leads to Ephrata (the same as Bethlehem).20 Over her tomb, Jacob raised a monument; it is called, to this day, the Pillar of Rachel’s Tomb.21 And he went on from there, and pitched his tent on the further side of the Sheep-tower. | 6Venit igitur Jacob Luzam, quæ est in terra Chanaan, cognomento Bethel: ipse et omnis populus cum eo.7Ædificavitque ibi altare, et appellavit nomen loci illius, Domus Dei: ibi enim apparuit ei Deus cum fugeret fratrem suum.8Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccæ, et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum: vocatumque est nomen loci illius, Quercus fletus.9Apparuit autem iterum Deus Jacob postquam reversus est de Mesopotamia Syriæ, benedixitque ei10dicens: Non vocaberis ultra Jacob, sed Israël erit nomen tuum. Dixitque ei obstetrix: Noli timere, quia et hunc habebis filium.18Egrediente autem anima præ dolore, et imminente jam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benomi, id est, Filius doloris mei: pater vero appellavit eum Benjamin, id est, Filius dextræ.19Mortua est ergo Rachel, et sepulta est in via quæ ducit Ephratam, hæc est Bethlehem.20Erexitque Jacob titulum super sepulchrum ejus: hic est titulus monumenti Rachel, usque in præsentem diem.21Egressus inde, fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem gregis. |
| 22ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα κατῴκησεν Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ ἐπορεύθη Ρουβην καὶ ἐκοιμήθη μετὰ Βαλλας τῆς παλλακῆς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤκουσεν Ισραηλ καὶ πονηρὸν ἐφάνη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἦσαν δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Ιακωβ δώδεκα23υἱοὶ Λειας πρωτότοκος Ιακωβ Ρουβην Συμεων Λευι Ιουδας Ισσαχαρ Ζαβουλων24υἱοὶ δὲ Ραχηλ Ιωσηφ καὶ Βενιαμιν25υἱοὶ δὲ Βαλλας παιδίσκης Ραχηλ Δαν καὶ Νεφθαλι26υἱοὶ δὲ Ζελφας παιδίσκης Λειας Γαδ καὶ Ασηρ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Ιακωβ οἳ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ ἐν Μεσοποταμίᾳ τῆς Συρίας | 22 It was while he was living there that Ruben betook himself to his own father’s concubine, the one who was called Bala, and slept with her; nor did he contrive to keep Jacob in ignorance of it. Jacob had twelve sons altogether:23 by Lia, this first-born son, Ruben, as well as Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, and Zabulon;24 by Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin;25 by Bala, Rachel’s serving-woman, Dan and Nephthali;26 by Zelpha, Lia’s serving-woman, Gad and Aser. These were Jacob’s sons, and Mesopotamia of the Syrians was their birth-place. | 22Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben, et dormivit cum Bala concubina patris sui: quod illum minime latuit. | 27ἦλθεν δὲ Ιακωβ πρὸς Ισαακ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ εἰς Μαμβρη εἰς πόλιν τοῦ πεδίου αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρων ἐν γῇ Χανααν οὗ παρῴκησεν Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ28ἐγένοντο δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι Ισαακ ἃς ἔζησεν ἔτη ἑκατὸν ὀγδοήκοντα29καὶ ἐκλιπὼν ἀπέθανεν καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τὸ γένος αὐτοῦ πρεσβύτερος καὶ πλήρης ἡμερῶν καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν Ησαυ καὶ Ιακωβ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ | 27 He went, too, to visit his father Isaac at Mambre, the city of Arbee, also called Hebron; here, as strangers, Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.28 And now Isaac finished his life, of a hundred and eighty years;29 he died at last, worn out with age, his tale of years complete.
