Recording Sessions

In The Studio
Like many other bands,The Misfits recorded atseveral different studios over the years and had recording sessions that tookplace over the course of several months, with long breaks in between studiovisits. Very few written records were kept, and it is very possible that tapeswere lost or stolen.

The Misfits recorded "live inthe studio" directly onto two-inch multi-track tapes, usually with 8 or 16tracks. A multi-track tape plays and records in only one direction and has acertain number of tracks or channels onto which music is recorded. Forinstance, a song on an 8-track tape might have three tracks devoted to guitars, one for bass, one for vocals, one for drums, and two for background vocals.Multi-track tapes include almost everything recorded during the session, fromthe band talking to alternate takes of the songs.

After recording, the band selected the best takes of eachsong, mixed them, and transferred them to a 1/4 inch master tape. The mixingprocess usually involved the band members and an outside producer selectingwhich tracks to use in a song, which tracks to re-record, and where and when toadd new tracks. Mixing also involves adjusting the volume levels of the tracksand adding effects, if necessary. Occasionally, as in the case of "In TheDoorway," the final mix of a song used portions from different takes of thesame song. The producer than transferred the final mixes to a 1/4 inch mastertape. This mix-down tape, in turn, was mastered (by adjusting the high or lowend, for instance). WithThe Misfits, many songs werere-mastered years later for release on compilations. AllCollection II versions were re-mastered in 1987 by GlennDanzig or 1995 by Tom Begrowicz. Begrowicz also re-mastered all the tracks onThe Misfits Box Set in 1995.

Notes:

Recording
This session was taped with a 16-track recorder onto three reels of 2" tape.Since Franché Coma had not yet learned all the songs when they first enteredthe studio, Danzig laid down the initial guitar tracks on "Static Age" and "TVCasualty," and Franché added his own guitar tracks later. Franché played barre or open chords and used both up and down strokes on all 17 songs. He added one or two extra guitar tracks to each take selectedfor release; "Attitude," "We Are 138," "Some Kinda Hate," and "Spinal Remains"had three guitar tracks and "Theme For A Jackal" had four.

Mixing and mastering
The band mixed songs 1-14 in February 1978 onto two 1/4" tapes; songs 1-8 onthe first and songs 9-14 on the second. This original mix, which is stillavailable on bootleg tapes, included a microphone pop at the end of "Come Back"and talking before "Theme For A Jackal," both of which were edited out when theStatic Age album was released. Interestingly, theoriginal mix of "Bullet" lacks the "1-2-3-4" introduction later included on theBullet andBewareversions. "Last Caress" was remixed for release onBeware (see 09//1979). Danzig also overdubbed and remixedsongs 1-3, 6, 9-10, 14-16 forLegacy Of Brutality(see 1985).Collection II versions were re-masteredin 1987 from Danzig's mix-down tape, andThe Misfits BoxSet andStatic Age versions were re-masteredin 1995 from Franché Coma's mix-down tape. Caroline Records latermixed and mastered songs 15-17 (see 02/24/1997).

Recording
The band recorded one take of "Where Eagles Dare" and several takes of theother songs. Although they usually segued from "Teenagers From Mars" to"Children In Heat" while performing live, they made several mistakes recordingthe pair this way in the studio. Instead, they recorded them separately andmixed them to sound as though they were played continuously. Danzig used a 1957Gretsch guitar for the backwards feedback intro to "Where Eagles Dare" (CO1,BS1).

Mixing and mastering
The songs were mixed on 02/05/1979, although theHorror Business single insert incorrectly says02/28/1979. The original mixes of all five songs areincluded on theSessions disc ofThe Misfits Box Set (BS3) with Bobby Steele's guitar tracks only. At the end of the recording session, Danzig overdubbedan extra guitar track onto all the songs and remixed them (BEW, BS1, BS2, CO1, HOR, LOB). TheCollections disc ofThe Misfits Box Set (BS1) includes a version of "Teenagers From Mars" with Dave Achelis's introduction edited out. "Where Eagles Dare"was remixed forCollection I (see 1986).

Recording
The Misfits began this recording session on08/07/1980 with Bobby Steele on guitar and completed and mixed on 09/05/1980with Doyle. For each song, Bobby laid down three guitar tracks (one leadtrack and two rhythm tracks). Doyle later added guitar tracks to most songs, which were then mixed with his guitar sound in the center. Two songs also include additional guitar by producer Robbie Alter.Excluding overdubs, each song was recorded in one take, except "LondonDungeon," of which the band recorded two takes.

Mixing and mastering
"Skulls" and "Astro Zombies" were later remixed forCollection I.The Misfits laterrecorded a different drum track for "Halloween II" and remixed the song for theHalloween 7" (see 1981). Bill Inglot and Andrew Garver of RhinoRecords re-mastered "Halloween" for theNew WaveHalloween compilation album. All 13 songs were later remixedfor12 Hits From Hell (see 07/26/2001)

Notes:According to interviews with Glenn Danzig, Steve Zing, and Al Pike,"Archangel" was recorded by Danzig and Jerry Only at Mix-O-Lydian Studio in1981. Dave Vanian ofThe Damned was supposed to jointhem in the studio later to add his own vocal track, replacing Danzig's. Whenthis did not happen, Danzig abandoned the song until August 1983 when heoverdubbed new tracks withSamhain for release onInitium. The Misfitsversion is longer than the laterSamhain recording, with less rhythm guitar after the guitar solo. UnliketheSamhain version, it comes to a complete endingand does not fade out. It has never been released.

Notes:According to Jerry Only, the name of this studio may actually have been NewFound Sounds. On "American Nightmare," Danzig used a 1957 Gretsch guitar. Songs3-6 have been widely distributed on bootlegs such asA WalkAmong The Dead. "20 Eyes" is extremely similar to the August 1981version but has a simpler drum beat, a different guitar strumming style, and aslightly different vocal track. "I Turned Into A Martian" differs slightly fromlater versions with its vocal track and ending. "Astro Zombies" has a simplerdrum track and prominent background vocal track absent from later versions."Devils Whorehouse" has an extra vocal track in the background and slightlydifferent instrumentation from later versions. All songs are slower than laterversions and include much guitar feedback. A later mix of "Hate Breeders"appeared onWalk Among Us (see 01//1982). This studio was previously erroneously listed as "Newsoundland" and has been corrected throughout.

Notes:According to Eerie Von, five of these songs (all except "Cough/Cool") were intended for a proposedWalk Among Us 2 album. He and Danzig recorded songs 1-2 on 08/08/1986, song 3 on 09/03/1987, and songs 4-6 on 09/10/1987. For "Cough/Cool," Danzig re-recordedthe vocals and keyboards, and also added additional guitar and drum machinetracks; Eerie provided the distorted bass track. For "Devils Whorehouse," theyadded extra guitar, bass, vocals, and an electronic drum accent to the August1981 mix of the song.Danzig later included all of the songs onCollection II after giving up on theWalk Among Us 2 idea.
