At last, Lotus was able to return to the unidentified temple in thehills to plumb once more the mysteries of the dragonsbloom. Whether shewas too tired or she was just trying to watch too many pots, Lotusmissed one: The aging Daochu. His son. Khruul's nephew.(is that thethree different people seen in the image, or is this the son of Daochu, who is Khruul's nephew), who considered that Lotus took them forgranted and thought to use them. Nonetheless, they harvested the dark lotus andplanted more of it, distilling its essence into powders that affectedthe mind for good or ill, and serums that transformed animals intomonstrous beings. Needing someone with expertise in such fields, theyrecruited Carlo Strang, a brilliant student who had been disgraced inthe West for his wild theories and ethical violations who had thepotential they needed. Strang soon perfected a drug stronger thanheroin and available only to them, which Strang felt could make Lotus avirtual queen. Wong Tan Chu (son of Wong Daochu) and the Khruul led an army into thetemple, denouncing Lotus and her people as traitors and intending toarrest them as seize everything for themselves. Although now moredependent on the lotus, Lotus was able to wield it in wider ways, andshe wiped the memories of Wong and Khruul while driving the soldiersmad. |
