“If you look closely at the stone walls, you will notice fossils mixed in. Think of it as nature's mosaic, and remember it always.”
Cascade Kingdom brochure,Super Mario Odyssey

Stone walls are objects inSuper Mario Odyssey. These yellow rocks are found in theCascade Kingdom and theWooded Kingdom. There are two main variations: short barriers and large blocks. Stone walls have fossils embedded in them, including shell ones, but also a number of sprites fromSuper Mario Bros. They includeGoombas,Spinies,Bullet Bills,Koopa Troopas, andHammer Bros. Stone walls are indestructible forMario, butChain Chomps andT-Rexes can break them. Mario cancapture either enemy, then use it to break a stone wall. In addition, a capturedCoin Coffer can shootcoins that break stone walls. In the Wooded Kingdom, if the fedora-wearing T-Rex performs its charging attack into a stone wall, it breaks, but the T-Rex becomes stunned.

The Great Barrier

Two stone walls in the Cascade Kingdom are setpieces with cutscenes involved. One stone wall contains thePower Moon for the objectiveOur First Power Moon. The light from this Power Moon pores out of the rock. It is also holding thestone spire in place. Once the rock is destroyed and theMoon Pedestal underneath the rock is activated, the stone spire falls over. A second stone wall covers an entire cliffside. It is referred to as theGreat Barrier.[1] The cliff it is blocking contains a8-bit pipe, which allows Mario to enter the wall as a sprite. Other living sprites of Goombas,Brick Blocks,? Blocks, and coins are in this wall, and Mario can exit through the top to reachFossil Falls Heights. Breaking this wall causes a special cutscene to play, where the rocks fall away. There is aBig Chain Chomp near the Great Barrier to use against it, but when the Great Barrier is broken, that Big Chain Chomp disappears forever. Neither stone wall appears for the rest of the game after being broken.
