Start Blocks[1] are a set of three pinkblocks that debuted inNew Super Mario Bros. U, and made further appearances inSuper Mario Maker,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS,Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, andSuper Mario Maker 2. They are similar in function to the respawn platforms inMario Bros. and theSuper Smash Bros. series.
History
Super Mario series
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Start Blocks first appeared inNew Super Mario Bros. U, they appear underneath the player during challenges in which the player cannot touch the ground, disappearing after they jump or fall off. Start Blocks reappear in the game'sNintendo Switchport,New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, serving the same function as previously described.
Super Mario Maker series
In all three of theSuper Mario Maker games, Start Blocks only appear when testing a level inCourse Maker and there are no platforms below the player, spawning underneath the player and disappearing when the player jumps or walks off.
Super Smash Bros. series
In bothSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Start Blocks appear in the beginning of a battle in the stageSuper Mario Maker, where they spawn underneath every player and fade out when the match begins.
